Vattenfall is a European energy company owned by the Swedish government. It generates and sells electricity and heat using a mix of sources, with a strong focus on wind and solar power, plus hydroelectric plants. Its products work by running energy generation assets (like wind farms and solar parks) and delivering power to homes and businesses through energy grids and customer services. Historically it expanded from Sweden into other European countries and, after a period of coal investments, shifted to a portfolio centered on renewables and low-emission energy. What sets Vattenfall apart is that it is state-owned and has actively rebalanced its portfolio toward clean electricity, including selling coal operations, to build a Europe-wide renewable energy company. Its goal is to become a leading European provider of renewable energy by growing wind and solar capacity and helping customers reduce their carbon footprint.

What believers are saying

  • July 1, 2026, Nordlicht I began construction, targeting operation in 2028.
  • H1 2026 operating profit reached SEK 28.9 billion, and net cash turned positive.

What critics are saying

  • May 2026 appeals delayed Vattenfall Eldistribution’s Oxelösund grid connection, slowing SSAB’s fossil-free conversion.
  • Videberg Kraft still needs European Commission state-aid approval before 2027 ownership changes.
  • A failed Videberg SMR program strands billions and undermines Vattenfall’s Swedish nuclear comeback.

What makes Vattenfall unique

  • Swedish state ownership gives Vattenfall cheaper financing and political support for long-cycle projects.
  • Vattenfall runs integrated offshore wind, grids, hydro, and nuclear across Northern Europe.
  • Videberg Kraft’s 2026 state-sharing structure uniquely socializes first-of-a-kind nuclear risk.
