About the job

Requirements
  • The role targets candidates with 0–1 years of experience and requires at least one internship or approximately six months of hands-on software or systems engineering experience; full-time roles, internships, and research lab work count.
  • Demonstrate Linux systems programming in C, including file I/O (read, write, seek, and mmap), multithreading (pthreads, mutexes, and condition variables), and socket programming (TCP/UDP, select/poll/epoll).
  • Demonstrate C++14/17, including object-oriented programming, Standard Template Library containers and algorithms, RAII, and smart pointers.
  • Understand networking fundamentals, including TCP versus UDP, ARP, DHCP, DNS, IP addressing and subnetting, and connectivity debugging with tools such as ip, ping, ss, tcpdump, and iptables.
  • Use Docker, including writing Dockerfiles, using docker-compose, managing images and volumes, and debugging running containers.
  • Understand core data structures and algorithms (stacks, queues, heaps, linked lists, and hash maps) and reason about time and space complexity.
  • Use Python and Bash scripting for automation and diagnostics.
  • Use Git from the command line, including branching, merging, rebasing, and resolving conflicts.
  • Be comfortable with the Linux command line, including processes, systemd services, permissions, and logs.
  • Learn independently by reading man pages, documentation, datasheets, and RFCs.
  • No degree is required; candidates are evaluated on demonstrated skill, projects, and work experience.
Responsibilities
  • Help build and debug robot boot-up sequences and service orchestration to make system bring-up reliable and deterministic.
  • Configure and troubleshoot Linux networking (TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS, and iptables) for robot-to-cloud and inter-robot communication under senior engineers' guidance.
  • Build, run, and maintain Docker containers for robot and cloud deployments.
  • Write Bash and Python scripts for fleet diagnostics, log collection, and routine system tasks.
  • Work with robotics, perception, and application teams to debug integration issues on real hardware.
  • Follow team Git workflows and participate in code reviews by giving and receiving feedback.
  • Document work and learning for the benefit of the rest of the team.
Desired Qualifications
  • Exposure to ROS 2 (pub/sub, services, actions, and launch files) or DDS.
  • Familiarity with CMake (targets, find_package, and CTest).
  • Understand peer-to-peer versus centralized messaging, such as DDS versus MQTT.
  • Configure networks on routers and switches, including VLANs.
  • Have basic knowledge of SQL or NoSQL databases.
  • Know network security basics, including checksums and hashes (CRC, SHA), public-key encryption, and digital signatures.
  • Have projects on embedded hardware (Jetson or Raspberry Pi), self-hosted servers, or home networks.
  • Have open-source contributions or a GitHub profile showing systems-level work.

About the company

Origin builds a general-purpose construction robot that automates interior finishing trades such as drywall finishing and painting on real job sites. The AI-powered system can operate power tools and work alongside human crews across multiple trades. It is already deployed on live job sites in New York City with major contractor partners. Its goal is to enable scalable, high-quality, and cost-efficient construction by augmenting or replacing manual interior finishing work with intelligent robotics.
