Requirements
  • Participate in orientation with satisfactory completion of the didactic and clinical components outlined in the orientation process.
  • Maintain required certifications, Duke University Health System and Duke Life Flight competencies, and continuing education necessary to participate on the Duke Life Flight Team.
  • Attend all staff meetings and review staff meeting minutes.
  • Work a minimum of one 12-hour shift in each two-week pay period to maintain clinical proficiency on transport vehicles and job-specific duties.
  • Be able to work day or night shifts and rotate as needed by the unit.
  • Be flexible to staff day or night shifts at any Duke Life Flight base.
  • Have a minimum of three years of critical care nursing experience as a ground and/or air transport nurse.
  • Have recent direct patient care experience within the six months before application.
  • Hold current registration with the North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse or current compact registered nurse licensure to practice in North Carolina.
  • Hold current Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and Neonatal Resuscitation Provider certifications.
  • Be certified as a North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician.
  • Possess one current trauma course before hire: Prehospital Trauma Life Support, Trauma Nurse Core Course, Transport Provider Advanced Trauma Course, Pediatric Advanced Trauma Course, Basic Trauma Life Support, or International Trauma Life Support.
  • Hold current Certified Transport Registered Nurse or Certified Flight Registered Nurse certification.
  • Meet the physical requirements of no more than 230 pounds in full uniform and no more than 6 feet 4 inches in height.
Responsibilities
  • Provide and supervise direct and indirect total nursing care responsibilities.
  • Use the nursing process of assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating to achieve nursing department goals.
  • Plan and provide advanced or specialized nursing care for patients according to the DUHS Professional Practice model and approved emergency medical services practices.
  • Participate in the clinical ladder program, educational activities, departmental committees, research projects, and other health-related projects as assigned.
  • Provide nursing services to patients and families within the scope of practice defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
  • Follow the rules and regulations of applicable local, state, and federal agencies and accrediting bodies.
  • Maintain respectful relationships and participate in customer service.
  • Work with interdisciplinary teams to provide critical care and emergency air and ground transport services to critically ill patients of all ages.
Desired Qualifications
  • Four years of critical care nursing experience as a ground and/or air transport nurse is preferred.
