Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Training in multiple trades programs at a vocational or technical school, college, or apprenticeship sponsor organization is required.
  • Five years of related work experience in a multi-complex maintenance environment is required; full-time-equivalent time spent in trades programs may count toward this requirement.
  • Knowledge of basic electrical, carpentry, mechanical, and plumbing techniques, procedures, and materials is required.
  • Knowledge of building elements and codes is required.
  • Knowledge of safety rules, procedures, and practices, including the proper use of safety equipment as defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and industry standards, is required.
  • Ability to apply trade and safety knowledge, safely use relevant tools and equipment, solve problems, manage information, and identify and avoid hazards is required.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematic and construction drawings, service manuals, and other technical documents is required.
  • Ability to use common powered bench and hand tools, including drills, grinders, and compressed air, as well as non-powered hand tools, is required.
  • Ability to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods; work in confined spaces, awkward positions, outdoors, and at heights up to 30 feet; and work around dust, heat, cold, noise, fumes, communicable diseases, hazardous materials, and pharmacological agents is required.
  • Ability to transport or position tools, equipment, and materials and push or pull loaded hand trucks weighing up to 75 pounds is required.
  • Attention to detail, visual acuity, and manual dexterity are required.
Responsibilities
  • Perform inspection, maintenance, and repair work on building systems and components under general supervision using electrical, carpentry, mechanical, and plumbing technologies.
  • Make decisions based on trade practices and supervisor direction within the scope of the position.
  • Recommend and participate in the development, improvement, and implementation of departmental maintenance operations related to current and anticipated workload.
  • Train peer and lower-level positions as directed by the supervisor.
  • Identify, analyze, diagnose, and resolve routine maintenance problems.
  • Read and interpret schematic and construction drawings, service manuals, and other technical documents.
  • Follow instructions provided by blueprints, drawings, written materials, work orders, and oral instruction.
  • Communicate in writing and orally with the supervisor and departmental and Johns Hopkins Medicine staff.
  • Assimilate Johns Hopkins Hospital and departmental missions, policies, procedures, and job-specific safety aspects.
  • Use protective safety devices, including safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, infection-prevention apparel or apparatus, and a back belt.
