Storm Shelter precaution workshop offered online.

Storm Shelter precaution workshop offered online. Posted Wednesday, August 5, 2026 12:00 am Workshop to address high-wind events in communities and public spaces Finding a safe place to wait out dangerous weather is difficult in places susceptible to high-wind events and at times when outdoor recreation exposes more people to peril. These concerns will be addressed at an online workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 12. Shelby Doyle, associate professor of architecture at Iowa State University's College of Design, will present three different models of 3D-printed concrete community storm shelters, and participants will give feedback on changes they would make to the designs so they could be more multifunctional in their communities. Doyle is working with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, ICON Build and the Walter P. Moore engineering firm on a Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities scoping grant to design printable structures that can withstand winds of up to 250 mph. Through a grant from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, Doyle and her Extension partner, Abbie Gaffey, an Iowa State University Extension and Outreach community and economic development field specialist, have provided in-person workshops in the flood-impacted communities of Spencer and Rock Valley in northwest Iowa. "This grant has been an important opportunity to explore how we can translate innovative on-campus design research into resilient public infrastructure for Iowa's communities," Doyle said. In the Aug. 12 online workshop, Doyle and Gaffey engage with communities that have other risk areas, such as youth summer camps, outdoor sports complexes or large RV parks. "Communities need to be thinking about how the need for storm shelters has changed over time with different kinds of storms, more homes being built without basements and community amenities that are more than FEMA's recommended nine minutes away from safe storm shelters," Gaffey said. The online workshop is free, but advance registration is encouraged. For information, contact Abbie Gaffey, community and economic development field specialist, at [email protected].

Walter P Moore elevates Manoj Adwaney to lead expanding infrastructure practice.

Walter P Moore elevates Manoj Adwaney to lead expanding infrastructure practice. May 19, 2026 Manoj Adwaney Walter P Moore has appointed longtime engineering executive Manoj Adwaney as executive director of infrastructure as the global engineering firm expands integrated infrastructure services across healthcare, mobility, civil and site-development markets. The Houston-based firm said Adwaney will oversee strategic growth, client engagement and cross-disciplinary coordination across its infrastructure practice, aligning civil engineering, water systems, transportation and site-development capabilities around increasingly complex client projects and long-term capital programs. The promotion reflects broader shifts in infrastructure delivery, where clients are increasingly seeking integrated engineering teams capable of coordinating large-scale projects across multiple technical disciplines while balancing operational continuity, long-term resiliency and regulatory requirements. Adwaney previously served as director of civil engineering, leading one of Walter P Moore's largest infrastructure groups. The firm said his leadership has been particularly defined by multidisciplinary coordination and long-term institutional client relationships. CEO Dilip Choudhuri said Adwaney has demonstrated an ability to connect technical engineering expertise with the operational and business realities facing clients managing complex infrastructure environments. Much of Adwaney's work has centered on healthcare infrastructure, an area where engineering complexity has increased substantially as hospital systems modernize campuses, expand outpatient networks and invest in resiliency, utility redundancy and long-term facility planning. Walter P Moore said Adwaney has built longstanding relationships with major healthcare organizations including Texas Medical Center, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston Methodist and Memorial Hermann. Healthcare infrastructure projects increasingly require coordination across transportation access, utility systems, water management, parking, campus expansion and operational continuity planning, particularly for medical campuses operating continuously during construction and redevelopment activities. The firm also highlighted Adwaney's collaborative work with architects, developers and public-sector stakeholders including HOK, Stantec, Hines, HDR, HKS and Perkins&Will, reflecting the growing importance of integrated project delivery models across large-scale infrastructure and institutional development programs. Engineering firms are increasingly reorganizing leadership structures around multidisciplinary infrastructure platforms rather than standalone engineering specialties as clients pursue larger, more interconnected development and modernization programs. Walter P Moore said Adwaney's expanded role will focus on strengthening integration across infrastructure disciplines while positioning the firm for growth opportunities tied to urban development, healthcare expansion, mobility systems and resilient infrastructure planning. Choudhuri said Adwaney's collaborative leadership approach will help the firm leverage expertise across practice areas while expanding into new markets and project opportunities. Founded in 1931, Walter P Moore provides structural, civil, transportation, diagnostics and construction engineering services through more than 1,000 professionals operating across 27 U.S. offices and nine international locations. The firm works across sectors including healthcare, commercial development, transportation and public infrastructure.
