About the company

National Water Services

View

National Water Services runs refill-water stations inside grocery and natural foods stores across the US and Canada, where shoppers fill their own bottles instead of buying bottled water. It sells that water under the FreshPure Waters brand and its sister brand Arctic Mountain. A filtration unit installed out of sight in each store cleans local tap water with reverse osmosis and ultraviolet light, then pipes reverse osmosis, alkaline or deionized water to the station. Shoppers pay for each refill at the store's checkout, while the company installs and services the equipment. National Water Services was founded in 1991 and is headquartered in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • A new owner backs growth: private equity firm TowerBrook bought FreshPure from Rise Run Capital by June 2026.
  • Gig work comes with a steady route: field technicians service the same assigned stores instead of random job pickups.
  • Repair skills earn more: a Boise on-call service technician posting pays $55 an hour and requires no trade license.

What critics are saying

  • Field roles are contract gigs: technicians work as independent contractors, with mileage and travel folded into the hourly rate.
  • Every sale is shared: FreshPure splits refill revenue with the grocers that host its machines.
  • Hours are limited: many route postings cover one or two hours a week, pitched as part-time side income.

What makes National Water Services unique

  • Major natural grocers host its stations: FreshPure machines run inside Whole Foods Market and Sprouts Farmers Market stores.
  • FreshPure offsets its own footprint: its WaterNeutral program buys carbon and water credits for American West watersheds.
  • Quality checks are frequent: FreshPure tests its machines weekly or every two weeks and uses third-party labs.
