About the company

Abbott makes medical devices, diagnostic tests, nutrition products and branded generic drugs for hospitals, laboratories, pharmacies and patients. Its best-known product is the FreeStyle Libre, a coin-sized sensor worn on the upper arm that tracks blood sugar around the clock without routine finger pricks. Its other lines run from heart valves, pacemakers and brain stimulators to lab analyzers, rapid tests and mail-in colon cancer screening kits, and Abbott earns money by selling these products to health systems, labs, retailers and consumers. The company was founded in 1888 by Chicago physician Wallace Abbott and is based in Abbott Park, Illinois.

What believers are saying

  • Devices carry the growth: Abbott's device sales rose 8.4% on a comparable basis from April to June 2026.
  • Diabetes teams get a launch to build: FDA authorized Libre Duo, the first glucose and ketone sensor, in August 2026.
  • Abbott bought a cancer screening business: its roughly $21 billion Exact Sciences purchase closed in March 2026.

What critics are saying

  • Formula lawsuits linger: after a $670 million August 2026 settlement, about 1,700 suits over preemie formula remain.
  • Nutrition staff sit in a shrinking unit: Abbott's nutrition sales fell 3.6% comparably from April to June 2026.
  • Abbott's top product drew a severe recall: FDA flagged Libre 3 sensor errors linked to seven deaths in January 2026.

What makes Abbott unique

  • Abbott's drug arm skips the US: it sells branded generic medicines only in markets such as India and Latin America.
  • Abbott sells to grocery shoppers too: Similac formula and Ensure shakes sit on store shelves, unlike device rivals.
  • Abbott's heart implant reports to patients: CardioMEMS lets heart failure patients read their own artery pressure on phones.

FDA clears device to fix leaky heart valves.

FDA clears device to fix leaky heart valves. By Salsabila Hartanti October 30, 2026 Abbott announced Wednesday that the FDA cleared its Amplatzer Paraclose PVL Occluder, marking the first U.S. approval for a catheter-based solution to seal leaks forming between heart tissue and surgically implanted replacement valves. The device treats paravalvular leak after valve replacement surgery, sparing patients from another open-heart surgery. Paravalvular leaks occur in 7% to 17% of mitral valve replacements and 5% to 10% of aortic valve replacements, causing symptoms such as shortness of breath and swelling of the legs and feet. The Amplatzer Paraclose PVL Occluder is the first minimally invasive device approved in the U.S. to close these leaks, offering an alternative to additional open-heart surgery. Sandra Lesenfants, senior vice president of Abbott's structural heart business, states that the device fills a critical unmet need, allowing many patients to avoid the risks of another surgery. FDA approval was supported by positive clinical data from the PARADIGM trial, a prospective, multicenter, single-arm study of 200 patients, which showed the device is an effective, minimally invasive alternative to repeat open-heart surgery. Abbott will present 30-day results from the trial at the upcoming Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics conference in San Diego. The Amplatzer Paraclose device is the latest addition to Abbott's portfolio of minimally invasive Amplatzer devices, including the Piccolo Occluder and Talisman PFO Occluder. Outside of the U.S., the device has been approved to treat paravalvular leaks in Europe since 2020, where it is known as the Amplatzer Valvular Plug III.

Another global medical device giant has officially announced its spin-off!

Another global medical device giant has officially announced its spin-off! October 26, 2026 Source: drugdu 43 According to recent foreign media reports, Abbott announced the spin-off of its businesses and a downward revision of its full-year guidance after releasing its Q3 results. Abbott announced plans to spin off its nutrition business into an independent company by the end of 2027. The new independent company will have annual sales of $8.5 billion, 16,000 employees, and 14 manufacturing sites. Its product portfolio will include well-known brands such as Ensure (a nutritional supplement drink), PediaSure (a pediatric nutritional supplement), Glucerna (a diabetes management nutrition brand), and Similac (an infant formula brand). Daniel Salvadori, the current Executive Vice President and Group President of Mature Pharmaceuticals and Nutrition Products, will become the CEO of this independent company. The spin-off plan includes Abbott distributing shares of the independent nutrition company to Abbott shareholders. Upon completion of the spin-off, Abbott shareholders will hold shares in both Abbott and the independent nutrition company. It is worth mentioning that before the spin-off plan was announced, Abbott had already reached settlement agreements worth more than $1 billion in lawsuits related to its infant formula products - of which $670 million was used to settle 2,000 claims and nearly $385 million was used to resolve charges related to the U.S. Department of Justice's False Declarations Act. However, the spin-offs by these giants are not a contraction, but a refocusing. Undoubtedly, they are divesting non-core, low-growth segments, channeling the resulting cash flow and organizational energy into higher-certainty battlegrounds. Abbott is no exception. After the spin-off, Abbott will focus on its core high-growth, innovation-driven portfolio of medical devices, diagnostics, and established pharmaceuticals. The spun-off nutrition business can also operate as an independent company, allowing for better allocation of strategic resources and a focus on priorities. Looking at Abbott's Q3 results, the spin-off plan has become clearer. In Q3, Abbott achieved revenue of $13.013 billion (+14.5%) and net profit of $920 million, a year-on-year decrease of 44.01%. Within Abbott's business segments, medical devices and established pharmaceuticals are the two main revenue drivers. In Q3, medical device sales grew 6.9% to $5.826 billion. Electrophysiology and cardiac rhythm management saw significant growth, both achieving double-digit increases. However, the nutrition business experienced slower growth and smaller scale compared to other segments, with revenue of $2.262 billion this quarter, representing a year-over-year increase of only 5.1%. At the same time, Abbott lowered its full-year guidance to comparable sales growth of 6.0% and earnings per share of $5.50 to $5.55, down from its previous guidance of sales growth of 6.5% to 7.5% and earnings per share of $5.45 to $5.60. It's worth noting that global medical device giants have frequently spun off their businesses in recent years. Following Medtronic's spin-off of MiniMed and Johnson & Johnson's proposed spin-off of its orthopedic business, DePuy Synthes, Abbott also officially announced the spin-off of its nutrition business into an independent company. Furthermore, business restructuring has been frequently occurring in the past two years. GE Healthcare integrated its imaging business and advanced visualization solutions into the "Advanced Imaging Solutions (AIS)" segment, while simultaneously promoting Patient Care Solutions (PCS) to improve profitability and evaluate its strategic options. Boston Scientific has launched a new round of global restructuring, involving supply chain optimization, production line relocation, and organizational restructuring, which is expected to be largely completed by the end of 2029. Abbott's whole-genome Oncodetect test boosts colorectal cancer recurrence detection sensitivity by 30%

Abbott said its whole-genome sequencing Oncodetect test detected colorectal cancer recurrence far more often than the whole-exome version. New Beta-CORRECT data presented at the European Society for Medical Oncology Congress showed a 30-percent absolute improvement in sensitivity within two years of surgery, using a single post-surgery blood draw. The test reached 72.2% sensitivity, against 42.2% for the earlier test. Among 157 patients tested with both, it found circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) in all 29 patients the older test caught, plus 15 more. Patients with detectable ctDNA after surgery had a 10.6-fold higher risk of recurrence. Two-year disease-free survival was 36.2%, versus 92.3% for ctDNA-negative patients. The study analysed samples from 279 patients, mostly with stage II and III disease. The test tracks up to 5,000 DNA variants unique to each tumour.

India regulator pulls up Nestlé, Abbott over infant-formula violations.

India regulator pulls up Nestlé, Abbott over infant-formula violations. The FSSAI issued a notice to Nestlé India concerning its Lactogen Pro 1 Powder, seeking scientific substantiation for whey protein claims. India's food-safety watchdog has issued notices to the local units of Nestlé and Abbott Laboratories over claims and promotions relating to infant formula. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued a notice yesterday (21 October) to Nestlé India concerning its Lactogen Pro 1 Powder, seeking scientific substantiation for claims the product "contains whey protein, which is a part of milk protein that is easy to digest". A separate notice concerning Nestlé's NAN Excella Pro Stage 1 questioned the claim that "5 HMOs helps support normal immune system". The regulator said the wording could "imply that the product is suitable for supporting the immune system, suggesting its use in relation to a particular physiological condition". "The claim was considered non-compliant with provisions prohibiting claims relating to the prevention, alleviation, treatment or cure of any disease, disorder or particular physiological condition, unless specifically permitted under applicable regulations," the FSSAI observed. Consequently, Nestlé India was directed to explain why action should not be initiated under the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006, and related rules and regulations. The post featured a "Top 5" list of infant-formula products, including Abbott's Similac Advance 1, Nutricia International's Aptamil Premium 1 and Dexolac 1, Nestlé India's Nan-Pro 1, and Reckitt Benckiser-owned Mead Johnson Nutrition's Enfamil A+ Stage 1. According to the FSSAI, the promotional video breached the Infant Milk Substitutes Act and infant nutrition marketing regulations by attributing benefits such as "balanced nutrition, stronger immunity, brain development and easy digestion to the products". Responding to the notice, Abbott told Just Food it was not involved in the post, had no relationship with the creator, and only became aware of the video after receiving the regulator's notice. "The content was independently created and published by a third party without Abbott's knowledge, involvement or authorisation," the group said, adding that it had communicated the fact to the FSSAI and does not endorse the representations made in the video. The measures form part of a widening FSSAI crackdown on nutritional marketing. In parallel, the regulator issued a so-called show-cause notice to Zydus Wellness Products over claims made on its Complan brand, including "2X Faster Growth", "Supports Concentration and Memory", and "Pro Immunity+ 34 Vital Nutrients". The authority demanded scientific justification for claims that Complan is "clinically proven" to help children grow taller faster, and cited the marketing slogan "Growth Comes in 4 Flavors" as non-compliant with advertising rules. The latest enforcement follows allegations by the regulator that the local arms of Nestlé and Unilever had made "misleading" health claims on adult and maternal nutrition lines. In those cases, Nestlé faced regulatory scrutiny over claims made for its Resource Renal vanilla-flavour powder, marketed for people with chronic kidney disease, while Hindustan Unilever (HUL), the UK-based FMCG group's local listed business, was issued notices on two Horlicks products. Just Food has contacted Mead Johnson Nutrition, Nestlé, Nutricia International, and Zydus Wellness Products in India for comment on the latest notices.
