Requirements
  • The applicant must be at least 21 years of age.
  • The applicant must have a valid driver's license and meet company driving guidelines.
  • The applicant must have at least 7 years of professional zoological experience within a zoological facility, preferably an Association of Zoos and Aquariums facility, or at least 2 years of internal experience at the Senior I Zoological Specialist level.
  • The applicant must be self-disciplined, self-reliant, and able to follow all safety guidelines.
  • The applicant must be able to operate light and possibly heavy equipment, including tractors, skid-steers, mowers, weed-eaters, trailers, and other equipment as needed.
  • The applicant must be able to work in a physically demanding outdoor environment across dust, extreme heat, cold, and rain.
  • The applicant must be able to lift, carry, push, and/or pull up to 50 pounds as needed in the specified area.
  • The applicant must be able to stand, walk, lift, bend, climb, and squat as needed in the specified area.
  • The applicant must be able to follow all standard operating procedures for the specified area.
  • The applicant must complete all provided SEA training as assigned.
  • The applicant must be flexible in work locations because placement depends on business needs and career development opportunities.
  • The applicant must be able to work at least 40 hours per week on a flexible schedule that includes mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, occasional overnights, and Zoo Manager on Duty shifts.
  • The applicant must have knowledge of animal collection management, conservation, animal diets and nutrition, natural history, animal wellbeing and husbandry, and applied animal behavior and training.
  • The applicant must be proficient in Microsoft software products.
  • Current internal applicants must not have significant performance deficiencies within a six-month period.
  • The applicant must be process- and detail-oriented and able to handle multiple projects with strict deadlines in a fast-paced and rapidly changing environment.
  • The applicant must be able to work successfully both independently and in a team environment.
  • The applicant must demonstrate consistent initiative, creative problem-solving skills, excellent written and verbal communication, and strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • The applicant must adhere to and ensure team compliance with SEA grooming guidelines and employment standards.
  • The applicant must successfully complete all legal, company, and department training requirements, including required tests and certifications within established timelines.
Responsibilities
  • Perform as a frontline supervisory position.
  • Supervise and mentor team members on required husbandry procedures, training methods, and safety guidelines through active participation.
  • Ensure the team provides an excellent guest experience and engages in all guest interaction programs on and off property.
  • Offer solution-minded and professional discussion for effective and open communication with team members, management, and other park departments.
  • Manage information exchange and follow-up.
  • Staff animal areas through effective scheduling and maintain a flexible work schedule covering all shifts of the assigned area.
  • Support and adhere to the Zoo's guiding principles covering staff development and culture, conservation and education, sustainable population planning, animal behavior management, animal health, and animal welfare.
  • Manage area maintenance, including submitting work orders, tracking project and repair completions, communicating needs to the assigned Zoological Curator, and participating in exhibit modifications and surrounding-area development.
  • Assist in promoting, developing, and completing research projects as opportunities arise.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with ambassadors and guests.
  • Ensure safe daily operations in the Zoological Department and compliance with park quality, safety, and husbandry standards.
  • Maintain team member morale and motivation in assigned areas and throughout the department when applicable.
  • Participate in developing and implementing short-term plans and long-range objectives.
  • Assist and support management with mentoring, performance evaluations, training plans, scheduling, daily record keeping, and policy and procedure development.
  • Participate in zoo interviews, assist management with the yearly budget, coordinate animal handling, and plan animal moves and introductions as needed.
  • Learn and demonstrate Zoo safety protocols, including standard operating procedures within assigned zoo areas, Zoo Manager on Duty training, and emergency response procedures.
Desired Qualifications
  • A college degree in Zoology, Biology, Psychology, or a related field is preferred.
  • Knowledge of SEA systems, including Kronos, ParkWare, and TRACKS, is preferred.
  • Experience with multiple species, including Class I animals, is preferred.
  • Leadership experience is preferred.
