  • Depending on assignment, possession of a valid Florida Driver License at the time of employment.
  • Successful completion of a background investigation, including criminal, reference, employment, and neighborhood checks; polygraph; medical evaluation; and drug screening.
  • No visible tattoos on the face, head, and neck, and professional-appearance tattoos must be covered.
  • No illegal drug sale within the lifetime.
  • No illegal drug use within the past 36 months and no marijuana use within the last 12 months.
  • No felony convictions within the lifetime.
  • No misdemeanor convictions involving perjury, false statement, or domestic violence within the lifetime.
  • No dishonorable discharge from specified United States military or reserve forces.
  • Residence within Hillsborough County or a listed neighboring county, with the residence within 60 miles of Falkenburg Road Jail at appointment or employment.
Responsibilities
  • Act as lead counsel during litigation and prosecution or defense of civil actions on behalf of the Sheriff's Office in state and federal courts, attend court proceedings, and keep the Sheriff and command staff informed of outcomes.
  • Review legal matters involving personal injury, civil litigation, contracts, agency liability, orders, policies and procedures, public records, federal litigation, appellate matters, and labor and employment.
  • Advise the Sheriff and staff on legal issues involving the Sheriff's Office.
  • Research and analyze issues where no guidelines or policies exist and provide defensible oral and written legal opinions.
  • Research topics, incidents, documentation, and case histories and render legal opinions on personnel, training, corrections, fiscal, civil process, law enforcement, and other agency matters.
  • Compare policies and procedures with federal and state law, identify inconsistencies, and recommend changes.
  • Prepare and review contracts for completeness, accuracy, statutory compliance, bidding specifications, purchasing guidelines, and governmental regulations.
  • Interpret contracts to protect the Sheriff's Office's legal interests.
  • Monitor existing contracts and participate in contract negotiations to ensure obligations and specifications are met.
  • Review and respond to public records requests, gather data, redact legally protected information, and provide legal opinions consistent with public records law.
  • Prepare legislative summaries and identify potential agency impacts.
  • Coordinate with subject matter experts or legal personnel and prepare proposed new or revised legislation.
  • Accept, sign for, and review legal documents received by the Sheriff's Office and coordinate related actions.
  • Coordinate, investigate, and copy attorney requests for legal documents or actions.
  • Review seizures of currency, personal property, vehicles, and real property under state and federal forfeiture laws.
  • Litigate forfeiture actions, attend hearings, and keep the Sheriff and command staff informed.
  • Complete assignments within specified timeframes and budgets and in accordance with agency policies and regulations.
  • Remain available 24 hours a day to respond to field situations with potential civil liability and initiate investigations to protect the interests of the Sheriff and Hillsborough County.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
  • Work in an office environment within a law enforcement agency or courthouse or court complex.
  • Participate in on-call legal consultation and respond to emergency or disaster assignments as directed.
Desired Qualifications
  • Admission to the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida.
  • Civil litigation or insurance defense experience.
  • Trial or prosecution experience.
  • Experience working for a law enforcement agency.
