About the company

REGENT designs and sells all-electric seagliders for coastal transportation. Its flagship Viceroy uses three modes—sitting on its hull, rising on hydrofoils, and flying in ground effect just above the water—powered by electric propulsion for high-speed, low-emission travel up to 180 miles today (potentially more later). Unlike traditional aircraft makers, REGENT leverages maritime regulation (Coast Guard) with FAA support and uses existing dock infrastructure, enabling faster, lower-cost market entry. The goal is to provide scalable, zero-emission coastal mobility that reduces congestion and operating costs for regional travel, while expanding manufacturing and pursuing defense applications.

What believers are saying

  • REGENT raised $240 million on August 27, 2026, funding manufacturing and certification.
  • The U.S. Marine Corps expanded testing to $19.25 million on October 1, 2026.
  • Management claims more than $10 billion in orders across six continents, plus Japan Airlines and Brittany Ferries interest.

What critics are saying

  • Coast Guard Design Basis Agreement remains publicly unapproved in October 2026, threatening 2027 deliveries.
  • The first crewed flight followed a damaged prototype in October 2025, exposing test-program fragility.
  • REGENT’s existential risk is certification slippage after capital burn, leaving a beautiful prototype and no revenue.

What makes Regent unique

  • REGENT’s Viceroy flew crewed on September 2, 2026, proving all-electric ground-effect operations.
  • The company sits under U.S. Coast Guard maritime rules, not FAA aircraft certification.
  • Its Quonset factory opened June 16, 2026, enabling domestic production of Viceroy and Squire.

REGENT wins $5M extension for Marine Corps Seaglider testing.

REGENT wins $5M extension for Marine Corps Seaglider testing. REGENT Craft has secured a $5 million extension to its agreement with the US Marine Corps Warfighting Lab (MCWL) to test its electric Seaglider prototype in operationally relevant environments. The additional funding brings the agreement's total value to $19.25 million and supports a fourth phase of demonstrations and command-and-control integration. Six deliverables are planned for this phase, covering prototype capabilities and work on how Seagliders could be assigned missions, tracked, and coordinated during defense operations. The extension follows Phase III demonstrations of Viceroy, REGENT's full-scale electric Seaglider prototype, including a flight in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, last month. Further testing will assess the prototype in conditions relevant to military missions and advance its integration with defense command-and-control systems. "This next phase of our MCWL partnership is about putting the technology in the hands of the warfighter so they can fully realize the advantages Seagliders bring to the forward-operating areas," said Becky Russo, REGENT Craft Director, Defense Mission Integration. Earlier phases included a $4.75-million contract to assess technical feasibility and a $9.5 million allocation for full-scale prototype demonstrations. Water-Based transport. REGENT is developing Seagliders to transport personnel and equipment over water, including for military logistics missions in areas where transport routes and infrastructure face threats. The Viceroy takes off and lands on water and flies close to the surface, allowing it to operate without a runway. Its electric propulsion system is designed to recharge from shore or aboard ships. REGENT projects a top speed of 180 miles (290 kilometers) per hour and a range of up to 180 miles (290 kilometers) once operational.

Amo opens second Blue Economy tour at REGENT's new North Kingstown factory.

Amo opens second Blue Economy tour at REGENT's new North Kingstown factory. The congressman will spend the coming weeks visiting marine trades, aquaculture, research and manufacturing sites across the First District Rep. Gabe Amo began a second Blue Economy tour of Rhode Island on Wednesday at REGENT Craft, which cut the ribbon on a new factory where it builds its electric seagliders. Amo, the ranking member of the House Science Committee's environment subcommittee, said he plans to visit workers, small businesses, researchers, educators and nonprofits across the First Congressional District over the coming weeks. "Our Blue Economy is about more than what happens on the water," Amo said. "It's about good jobs, new technology, and lowering costs by building more of what we need right here in Rhode Island." His office says the sector employs 36,000 people in Rhode Island and contributes more than $5 billion to the state's gross domestic product annually. Nationally it accounts for 2.4 million jobs and $397 billion. Amo ran a similar tour in 2024 that included stops at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, VATN Systems in Portsmouth, Flux Marine in Bristol and the Community College of Rhode Island's wind safety training program. Quonset's REGENT completes first crewed Seaglider flight over Narragansett Bay.

Quonset's REGENT completes first crewed Seaglider flight over Narragansett Bay. The milestone flight makes the new technology the largest all-electric, wing-in-ground effect vehicle to fly with people on board. September 3, 2026 A Rhode Island company has made history by launching the largest craft of its kind to fly with people on board. REGENT, the company looking to manufacture Seagliders out of Quonset, announced this week it has completed its first crewed test flight of Viceroy, the company's full-scale Seaglider prototype, on Narragansett Bay. The milestone flight makes it the largest-ever all-electric, wing-in-ground effect vehicle to fly with people on board. "This is the moment we have been envisioning and tirelessly pursuing for the past five-and-a-half years: REGENT has successfully proven safe, efficient ground-effect flight," says Billy Thalheimer, co-founder and chief executive officer of REGENT. REGENT, the subject of an October 2025 feature story in Rhode Island Monthly, was founded in 2020 by Thalheimer along with co-founder and chief technology officer Mike Klinker. The company is developing an all-electric craft that uses wing-in-ground technology to take off from the water and fly a short distance above the water's surface. The founders envision the Seaglider as a new, cheaper solution for short-haul transportation routes currently served by ferries or regional flights. According to an announcement, the first crewed Viceroy flight took place at the company's headquarters in Quonset with a crew of two captains aboard. The Seaglider flew a distance of 1,956 feet at a height of thirty-three feet over the water for thirty seconds. The company relocated to Quonset from the Boston area in 2022 and since then, has been testing its models on Narragansett Bay. A smaller, quarter-scale model, named Squire, completed a test flight on the bay in 2022. The founders say the Viceroy model that flew this week will be able to hold twelve passengers at capacity. "Completing this flight test validates years of rigorous engineering and operational work and gives us the confidence to move into full-rate production," says Klinker. "We showed today that flying a Seaglider is every bit as smooth and safe as we designed it to be. I can't wait to get onboard and to share the experience with others as we make our vision for the future of maritime mobility a reality." In addition to its corporate offices and testing facility, REGENT completed construction in June on a 255,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Quonset. The company plans to manufacture the vessels for passenger use as well as military applications under its REGENT Defense branch. REGENT had originally targeted the first test flight of the Viceroy model for last fall, but the timeline faced setbacks. Last October, a Seaglider prototype was damaged during an on-water hydrofoiling test. According to the company, the Viceroy test flight marks the start of the final stage of sea trials, which will continue through 2026.
