Requirements
  • Demonstrated general knowledge of electrochemical engineering, energy storage, battery safety, or safety of other energy technologies.
  • Demonstrated expertise in conducting experiments examining the performance and safety of energy storage technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain engineering-based academic and applied knowledge and skills.
  • Excellent communication, writing, and presentation skills are required.
  • Experience with electrochemical testing protocols such as cycling, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and direct-current internal resistance; battery test instruments such as cyclers; and cell teardown analysis or destructive physical analysis.
  • Advanced data analysis skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with academic teams, peers, Research Scientists, and other team members to complete a project from start to finish.
  • Strong technical writing skills and the ability to serve as lead author on reports and papers.
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field, plus two years of post-degree experience; or a Master’s degree in those fields plus four years of directly related post-degree experience; or a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering, or a related field, plus eight years of directly related post-degree experience.
  • Experience working with lithium-ion or other battery chemistries is required.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct experiments or develop theoretical models, develop preliminary findings, prepare written reports, and provide subject matter expertise supporting electrochemical safety research.
  • Apply engineering technology, systems engineering, and safety science concepts to research tasks; formulate, evaluate, and correlate engineering research concepts; guide analyses of unique problems; and develop improved techniques and methods.
  • Plan and conduct experiments focused on energy storage safety science, including lithium-ion batteries, other battery chemistries, and hydrogen systems.
  • Plan, design, and complete initial and follow-up procedures needed to conduct experiments.
  • Analyze test results to determine trends and develop solutions.
  • Keep current with evolving technologies by reading scientific journals, reviewing recent publications, and attending academic and technical conferences.
  • Serve as a point of contact on research projects by engaging, collaborating, cross-training, and guiding partners and team members in knowledge transfer based on subject matter expertise.
  • Work with students in academic collaborations and with other collaborator teams.
  • Present research results internally and at conferences and workshops.
  • Support the development of new research proposals and funding for grant applications.
  • Perform other duties as directed.
