About the company

Southwest Airlines is a low-fare passenger airline flying leisure and business travelers across the United States, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. It runs a point-to-point network that links many midsize and secondary airports directly instead of routing most trips through a few large hubs. Customers book through Southwest's own website and app, choosing fare bundles that set bag allowances, change flexibility and boarding order. Revenue comes from ticket sales, bag and seat fees, and sales of frequent-flyer points to partner companies. Southwest was incorporated in 1967, began flying three Texas cities in 1971, and is headquartered in Dallas, Texas.

What believers are saying

  • Fare changes are paying off: revenue hit a record $8.4 billion in the quarter ending June 2026, up 16.4%.
  • Frontline headcount is growing: Southwest had 73,456 full-time equivalent staff in June 2026, up 1.7%.
  • Chase cards lock in fliers: Southwest cardholders get a free checked bag and seat selection on any fare.

What critics are saying

  • Fuel is the swing cost: jet fuel ran nearly $900 million higher in the quarter ending June 2026.
  • Earnings targets keep slipping: in July 2026 Southwest cut its 2026 profit forecast floor to $3.25 a share.
  • Job cuts continue: after its first mass layoffs in 2025, Southwest cut about 75 more jobs in May 2026.

What makes Southwest Airlines unique

  • Frequent fliers bring a partner free: 100 one-way Southwest flights a year earn a Companion Pass for unlimited companion trips.

Southwest Airlines has priced a public offering of $1.25 billion in senior notes, the Dallas-based carrier announced on October 26, 2026. The offering has two parts: $600 million of 5.750% notes due 2029 and $650 million of 6.000% notes due 2031. Southwest plans to use the proceeds for general corporate purposes. That may include repaying its $300 million of 3.000% notes due November 15, 2026, along with other debt. The offering is expected to close on or about November 2, 2026, subject to customary conditions. Barclays, BNP Paribas, Standard Chartered, U.S. Bancorp Investments, and Wells Fargo Securities are joint book-running managers.

Southwest Airlines up 20.2% in a year to $39.88, above bearish $32.51 fair value

Southwest Airlines shares have returned 20.2% over the past year, including dividends. The stock now trades at $39.88, up from $34.68 on October 21, 2025. Investors then weighed two views. Bulls put fair value at $46, citing product changes such as bag fees and assigned seating. Bears set it near $32.51, expecting 5.9% annual revenue growth, profit margins of 5.8%, and pressure from fuel costs, softer leisure demand, and competition. Second-quarter revenue rose to $8.4 billion from $7.2 billion, and net income to $233 million from $213 million. Net margin slipped from 2.9% to 2.8%, as fuel costs stayed high. The cautious view holds that the current price already reflects a successful revamp, leaving limited room for upside.

Southwest Airlines cuts profit forecast as fuel costs overshadow turnaround gains.

Southwest Airlines cuts profit forecast as fuel costs overshadow turnaround gains. Published on 10/21/2026 at 05:47 pm EDT Chicago, Oct 21 (Reuters) - Southwest Airlines sharply cut its annual profit forecast on Wednesday, as surging fuel costs overshadowed gains from higher airfares and a business overhaul. The Dallas-based carrier expects adjusted earnings of $2.60 to $2.85 per share in 2026, down from its earlier forecast of $3.25 to $4.25. The midpoint of the new range is below analysts' average estimate of $2.85 per share, according to data compiled by LSEG. Southwest also forecast fourth-quarter earnings below Wall Street expectations, underscoring the challenge facing US airlines as rising fuel costs eat into revenue from sharply higher airfares. The carrier, once known for its free checked bags and open seating, has been overhauling its business to attract higher-spending travelers and generate more revenue through new products and fees. Southwest's results offer an early test of those efforts. The airline is collecting substantially more revenue even as it carries fewer travelers. The fuel shock, however, is making it harder to gauge how much of those gains will translate into profit. Southwest's average passenger fare jumped nearly 27% in the third quarter, helping lift revenue to a third-quarter record of $8.4 billion. Southwest also reported higher adjusted operating margin despite sharply higher fuel costs. "With the transformation complete, our efforts have shifted to optimizing the business," CEO Bob Jordan said in a statement, adding that demand remained strong in the fourth quarter. Southwest's fuel bill rose $821 million from a year earlier, and the carrier expects jet fuel prices to increase further in the final three months of the year. The company reported third-quarter adjusted earnings of 66 cents per share, above analysts' expectations of 58 cents and up from 11 cents a year earlier. HIGHER FARES, FUEL PRESSURE Southwest's outlook provides further evidence that higher airfares have not fully insulated US airlines from the fuel shock stemming from the Iran war. Delta Air Lines has warned that airlines may need to further restrain flight growth next year to sustain higher fares, while United Airlines expects elevated fuel costs throughout 2027, complicating efforts to improve profit margins. Southwest plans to increase capacity by 3% to 4% in the fourth quarter, after slightly reducing flying in the September quarter. It will outline its longer-term financial targets at an investor event in March. The carrier will discuss its financial results with analysts and investors on Thursday morning. Southwest Airlines cuts 2026 profit forecast to $2.60-$2.85 a share on higher fuel costs

Southwest Airlines became the third major US airline this month to cut its 2026 profit forecast because of higher fuel prices. It now expects adjusted earnings of $2.60 to $2.85 a share, down from a July forecast of $3.25 to $4.25. For the third quarter, adjusted earnings were 66 cents a share, against 58 cents expected, according to LSEG consensus estimates. Adjusted revenue was $8.42 billion, against $8.25 billion expected. "Demand remained strong as we lapped last year's bag fee and other commercial initiatives, reinforcing our belief that the earnings power we've built is durable, even with significantly higher fuel costs," chief executive officer Bob Jordan said. Southwest has been reworking its business model to grow revenue, dropping free checked bags and open seating.
