Requirements
  • At least 5 years of experience in accounting, finance, or internal audit roles.
  • A bachelor's degree with a major in finance, business, procurement, or accounting.
  • Previous experience with Great Plains or another major financial enterprise resource planning system; Microsoft Great Plains experience is an asset.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Broad-based experience in accounting and financial systems.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of standard accounts payable accounting principles, policies and procedures, and internal controls.
  • Previous experience working in a multi-entity, multi-database organization handling high volumes of data.
  • Strong analytical, time management, planning, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage technology to solve complex business process matters.
Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership support to the accounts payable team in reviewing and clearing aging and long-outstanding account balances in the accounts payable subledger and general ledger.
  • Create and follow through on action plans to clear long-outstanding balances, evaluate financial risks and implications, and propose write-offs or write-ons to profit and loss as needed.
  • Lead and close existing recovery audit efforts and ensure recoveries are completed and recorded properly in the appropriate general ledgers.
  • Assist in reviewing and posting monthly accounts payable transactions, ensuring accuracy and completeness of amounts and documentation and compliance with segregation-of-duties and other controls.
  • Review and improve accounts payable processes for recurring invoices, including utilities, rent, courier, and other centrally managed corporate charges.
  • Work with other accounting groups to close accounts payable accurately and timely according to the established close schedule.
  • Ensure designated general ledger accounts are reconciled and accounted for to maintain the integrity of the financial statements.
  • Identify and present continuous process improvement solutions to accounts payable and shared services leadership.
  • Support the monitoring and execution of internal control procedures to protect confidential records and company assets.
  • Maintain accounts payable procedural controls and ensure sufficient evidence is in place, monitored, and tracked to comply with corporate policies.
  • Validate and report key performance indicators for the accounts payable team to senior management against established process benchmarks.
  • Automate manual processes to drive efficiencies and support continuous improvement.
  • Assist with internal and external audits and ad hoc requests.
  • Support escalations from vendors and internal partners.
  • Leverage financial systems to support the core accounts payable team with vendor-account inquiries.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to team members and ensure reconciliation and audit deadlines are met.
  • Support staff training as required.

GFL Environmental launches two RNG facilities with OPAL Fuels to power 800 heavy-duty trucks

OPAL Fuels and GFL Environmental have begun construction on two renewable natural gas facilities at landfills in Georgia and Alabama. The projects will convert landfill methane into approximately 15 million gasoline gallon equivalents of RNG annually, enough to fuel roughly 800 Class 8 trucks. The expansion deepens GFL's partnership with OPAL Fuels in decarbonising transportation and building RNG infrastructure. However, the development doesn't substantially alter GFL's near-term investment narrative, which remains focused on integrating past acquisitions, managing high leverage and delivering on 2026 revenue guidance. GFL recently authorised share buybacks of up to 34.7 million shares and increased its dividend by 10%. Analysts project the company's revenue could reach CA$8.6 billion by 2029, implying 8.8% annual growth.

GFL to acquire Secure Waste for $6.4B, adding 80+ facilities across Western Canada

GFL Environmental has agreed to acquire Secure Waste Infrastructure for $6.4 billion, expanding its presence in Western Canada and North Dakota. The deal includes over 80 locations comprising 12 landfills, 55 waste treatment facilities, 12 recycling facilities, 98 injection wells and five transfer stations. Secure shareholders can choose $24.75 in cash, 0.4195 GFL subordinate voting shares, or a combination for each share held. Cash payments are capped at 20% of the total consideration, with GFL shares limited to 80%. GFL founder and CEO Patrick Dovigi said the acquisition will densify the company's Western Canada footprint and enhance its ability to offer comprehensive waste management services. The transaction requires shareholder approval and is expected to close in the second half of 2025.
