Requirements
  • Must pass or be a graduate of the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy, Rhode Island State Police Academy, Providence Police Academy, or Warwick Police Academy.
  • Must be eligible for licensing as a Special Police Officer by the Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police.
  • Candidates required to attend the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy must pass all recruitment training courses, including Emergency Water Safety.
  • Must pass a psychological examination and physical examination.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Must be a United States citizen.
  • Must have a high school diploma or General Educational Development certificate.
  • Must have no felony convictions.
  • Must be able to effect an arrest using handcuffs and other restraints.
  • Must be able to subdue resisting suspects using approved maneuvers and weapons and use hands, feet, and other approved weapons in self-defense.
  • Must be able to operate and use various types of law-enforcement equipment.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency with department-approved firearms and other authorized weapons.
  • Must be capable of gathering information during criminal investigations by interviewing victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informers.
  • Must be able to prepare investigative and other reports, including sketches, using appropriate grammar, symbols, and mathematical computations.
  • Must be able to process arrested suspects, including taking their photographs.
  • Must exercise independent judgment when determining reasonable suspicion to detain, probable cause to search and arrest, and when and to what degree force may be used.
  • Must be able to operate a law-enforcement vehicle during day and night, including emergency situations, congested traffic, and unsafe road conditions.
  • Must be able to pursue fleeing suspects and perform physically demanding rescue operations.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and coherently over law-enforcement radio channels.
  • Must be able to perform rotating-shift patrol functions, including foot patrol and physically checking building doors and windows.
  • Must be able to perform rescue functions during accidents, emergencies, and disasters, including arranging emergency medical aid and evacuating people from dangerous areas.
  • Must be able to extinguish small fires using a fire extinguisher and other appropriate means.
  • Must be able to process and transport prisoners and committed mental patients using handcuffs and other restraints.
  • Must be able to search people, vehicles, buildings, and large outdoor areas.
  • Must be able to conduct visual and audio surveillance for extended periods.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with people, including juveniles, by giving information and directions, mediating disputes, and advising them of rights and processes.
  • Must be able to read and comprehend legal and non-legal documents, including citations, affidavits, and warrants.
  • Must demonstrate communication skills in court and other formal settings.
  • Must be able to identify evidence and substances indicating criminal offenses, infractions, and dangerous conditions.
  • Must pass a comprehensive background investigation and have no felony convictions.
  • Must pass a psychological test administered by the University of Rhode Island and a physical examination administered by University Health Services.
  • Must pass the department's Campus Police Officer training program, including instruction on the Use of Force policy.
  • Must successfully complete a one-year probationary period, or six months for internal candidates.
  • Must be licensed as a Special Police Officer by the Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police.
  • Must have strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
Responsibilities
  • Maintain the safety and security of all University properties, faculty, staff, students, guests, and visitors during the assigned tour of duty.
  • Patrol University buildings, grounds, and adjacent public areas to enforce Rhode Island statutes and Brown University rules and regulations.
  • Prevent and suppress crime.
  • Protect life and property.
  • Apprehend and protect offenders.
  • Preserve the peace and maintain order.
  • Enforce state statutes and University regulations.
  • Assist with developing and improving mechanisms that create and enhance relationships between the department and the community.
  • Exercise the powers and authority of a licensed Campus Police Officer within the institution's lands and buildings and adjacent streets and highways, including arresting persons for violations of state criminal statutes and applicable city and town ordinances.
  • Maintain proficiency in the use of police equipment, including firearms, and use deadly force when appropriate under Rhode Island law and department policy.
  • Patrol Brown University buildings and grounds by the designated mode, with special attention to areas with high crime incidents.
  • Conduct criminal investigations and prepare reports of investigations.
  • Make arrests and process individuals.
  • Testify in court or at University hearings.
  • Notify superiors of major crimes and other notable incidents.
  • Give directions and general information to guests and visitors.
  • Respond to emergency calls, including fires and personal injuries.
  • Assist with training new officers.
  • Inspect and maintain assigned equipment, including firearms and clothing.
  • Perform other duties necessary to protect the lives, safety, and property of University students, staff, faculty, and guests.
