Mastercard pilots trust layer to solve stablecoin compliance bottleneck as onchain volumes hit $14.8T

Mastercard and Borderless.xyz launched a pilot programme on 5 August 2026 to address compliance bottlenecks in stablecoin payments. The initiative deploys Mastercard's Crypto Credential framework across Borderless.xyz's network, which connects wallet infrastructure to over 15 licensed stablecoin providers across more than 95 countries via a single API. The framework provides verification and governance metadata, enabling a single-audit compliance model where verified users transact using aliases whilst exchanging Travel Rule metadata. This aims to eliminate redundant verification at each counterparty, similar to correspondent banking in traditional finance. Initial pilot participants include Infinia, Walapay, and Koywe. The initiative differs from Mastercard's recent BVNK acquisition, valued at up to $1.8 billion, which focused on payment infrastructure rather than compliance.

Mastercard and Visa deepen stablecoin push with new Borderless and zerohash deals

Mastercard and Visa unveiled new stablecoin infrastructure partnerships on Wednesday, advancing their competing strategies in crypto payments. Mastercard is testing its Crypto Credential verification system with Borderless, a stablecoin network spanning over 100 countries and 15 licensed providers. The framework aims to standardise participant verification in onchain transactions for compliance purposes. Visa partnered with zerohash to enable businesses using Visa Direct to hold stablecoin balances for payouts and merchant settlements. Visa Direct reaches over 18 billion endpoints across more than 195 countries. Mastercard has pursued acquisitions, including its $1.8 billion purchase of BVNK completed this week. Visa has focused on platform services, scaling its settlement pilot to a $7 billion annualised run rate across nine blockchains. Despite competing approaches, both companies are founding validators on Circle's Arc blockchain and members of the Open Standard consortium launching Open USD stablecoin later this year.

Dubai Founders HQ partners with Mastercard to launch new finance solution for startups. Dubai Founders HQ has teamed up with Mastercard, supported by fintech platform Pemo, to roll out a new founder finance solution aimed at helping startups and SMEs cut costs and manage cashflow more effectively. The initiative gives eligible businesses access to more than AED 10,000 in first-year value. This includes up to 2% cashback on eligible foreign exchange and advertising spend, free access to Pemo's spend management platform, Mastercard-powered corporate cards and a range of exclusive business offers. According to the organisers, participating businesses can typically recover between AED 500 and AED 1,200 a month in previously untracked expenditure. The automated expense management system is also expected to cut administrative workloads by more than 60 hours a month and shorten month-end closing timelines, in some cases from nine days down to three. The solution brings together corporate cards, real-time spend tracking and automated receipt collection in one platform, with integrations for accounting software including QuickBooks, Xero and Zoho. Founders will be able to issue cards to team members and set spending limits and approval controls, giving them greater oversight of company finances. Hadi Badri, CEO of the Dubai Economic Development Corporation, said the initiative reflects a commitment to giving founders practical tools to manage cash and strengthen financial discipline. Saeed Al Gergawi of the Dubai Chamber of Digital Economy said the partnership was designed to deliver high-impact solutions for real operational needs, while Mastercard's Mark Elliott pointed to the company's long-standing work supporting Dubai's commerce ecosystem. Pemo co-founder and CEO Ayham Gorani said the collaboration puts enterprise-grade financial tools directly into the hands of founders, helping them grow with greater confidence from Dubai. The Government of Rwanda has approved a phased plan to retire the country's 2G and 3G mobile networks and complete the transition to 4G and 5G.Under the plan, 3G services will be switched off nationwide on 30 June 2027. The 2G network will be retired at a later stage. Retiring 2G and 3G will make more spectrum available for 4G and 5G networks, which offer faster connections, greater capacity and stronger security. The Government is currently working towards December 2028 for the 2G switch-off. Global refinery development capital is now Nigeria. Nigeria is set to be the world's premier location for new fuel refinery developments over the next four years, according to Industrial Info Resources, with an estimated $10.74 billion investment which will be required to develop 24 modular refineries around the country, according to Industrial Info Resources. Nigeria's ambition is to build its refining capacity to 2.64 million barrels per day (bpd) by the end of 2030. The current refined fuel output in Nigeria stands at 650k bpd and the country is the globally leader in new refinery projects, outpacing major markets like the US, Iran, China, and Iraq. The Dangote Refinery, now Africa's largest, has enabled Nigeria to become a net exporter of gasoline and a major supplier of jet fuel to Europe. Dangote Oil, has also recently announced it plans to build a 650 000 bpd refinery in Kenya and has ambitions for further developments across the continent. Nigeria is also leading efforts to establish a West African fuel price benchmark based on regional supply, demand and logistics rather than based on foreign indices. This proposal will be a key focus of the second West Africa Refined Fuel Conference in Abuja on August 11-12. Producer Price inflation eases marginally in May. Statistics South Africa released the June 2026 Producer Price Index on 30 July 2026. Annual producer price inflation for final manufactured goods eased to 7.5%, down from 7.8% in May. On a month-on-month basis the index declined 0.1%. Main influencers The largest contributor remained the coke, petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products category, which has been driven by elevated fuel prices (petrol and diesel). This group had pushed the May reading higher and continued to dominate the annual rate in June, even as the overall figure moderated slightly. Other categories such as food, beverages and tobacco, and metals/machinery made smaller contributions. Outlook PPI is expected to stay relatively elevated in the near term while fuel-related base effects remain strong. Analysts generally anticipate some moderation in the second half of 2026 if global oil prices stabilise or ease and the fuel shock does not feed more broadly into other producer prices.
