Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience is required.
  • At least 7 years of relevant work experience is required.
  • Advanced knowledge of sponsored research regulations is required.
  • Supervisory experience is required.
  • Strong computing skills, particularly with Microsoft Excel and Word, are required.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and advanced Excel skills is required.
  • Knowledge of advanced financial principles, budget management, and financial analysis is required.
  • Experience working with international projects is required.
  • Education and/or experience with general finance and accounting concepts and practices is required.
  • Knowledge of Harvard systems including GMAS, HART, Buy2Pay, and Concur is required.
  • Knowledge of human subject use, animal use, and other research compliance areas is required.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail are required.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise and train research and financial administrators and provide daily guidance.
  • Allocate workloads to maximize research administrator effectiveness.
  • Assess staff performance and conduct reviews.
  • Assist Grants Managers in interpreting Harvard, School, and sponsor policies, regulations, and procedures.
  • Manage non-sponsored funding, including gifts and endowments.
  • Oversee pre- and post-award management for a large portfolio of sponsored research grants and subcontracts, much of which is funded by the National Institutes of Health.
  • Provide faculty with guidance and information needed to manage funding and effort effectively and compliantly.
  • Develop and implement departmental policies and processes.
  • Ensure research administration complies with sponsor guidelines and Harvard policies.
  • Ensure departmental financial transactions comply with Harvard and sponsor policies and regulations, and approve and transmit most departmental transactions.
  • Oversee and manage non-sponsored accounts, including endowments, gifts, start-up funding, and cost recovery centers.
  • Collaborate with academic staff regarding student finances and financial planning.
  • Prepare the annual department budget in collaboration with the Department Administrator and senior leadership.
  • Work with senior management, including the Director of Administration, Department Chair, and Directors of educational programs and student services, to develop and implement strategic financial plans.
  • Participate in School-wide and University-wide initiatives and meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • An MBA or master's degree in a relevant field.
  • Certified Research Administrator certification.
  • Expert knowledge of federal sponsored research policies and regulations.
