Surgical Technologists, sometimes called “scrub techs”,assistin surgical procedures under the supervision of surgeons andRegisteredNurses. They help toensure quality patient care during the operative procedure andmaintaina sterile field. Surgical Technologists perform a variety of functions, such as checking supplies and equipment, setting up sterile tables, performingappropriate counts, draping the sterile field, passing instruments to the surgeon and assistantduring the procedure, preparingsterile dressing and cleaninginstruments for terminal sterilization.This is a great hands-onlearning opportunity that will allow you to enhance your skills each and every day.

A caregiver in this positionworksvariabledays and hours between 7:00AM – 11:30PM, with on-call requirements.

A caregiver who excels in this role will: 

• Set up the sterile table and ensureappropriate supplies, drugs and equipment are available. 

• Assists RN in counting all sponges, instruments, etc. atappropriate timesduring surgery.

• Assistin gowning and gloving surgical team members and draping patients.

• Ensureasepticcondition ismaintainedby the scrubbed surgical team through the procedure. 

• Participate in the intraoperative “timeout.” 

• Collect,identifyand label specimens removed during surgical procedures andgivespecimens tocirculatorfor disposition. 

• Answer patient phone calls, gatherinformationandrelayto the provider.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

• Graduateof aSurgicalTechnology program accredited through theCommission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP)orAccrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES)OR completion of a military surgical technology program OR certification as a Surgical Technologist (acceptable certifications for this route are TS-C through the National Center for Competency Training or CST through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting)

• Basic Life Support (BLS)Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA)or American Red Cross 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

• Certified Surgical Technologist

• Trauma center experience
