Requirements
  • Be a first- or second-year student in an ARDMS CAHEP-accredited diagnostic medical sonography program in ultrasound, echo, or vascular studies.
  • Have current CPR certification.
  • Have computer usage experience.
  • Work under direct supervision during all imaging and not perform sonographic examinations independently.
  • Be able to use hands and fingers to operate equipment and handle folders and chart information.
  • Be able to walk or stand for up to 8 hours per shift in 30-minute increments.
  • Be able to pull, push, and lift patients weighing up to 300 pounds with assistance.
  • Be able to lift and move objects weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Be able to frequently stoop, crouch, bend, and lift arms above shoulder level.
  • Have hearing sufficient for normal conversation and vision sufficient for normal vision.
  • Know how to handle, dispose of, and clean up spills involving hazardous materials in the Ultrasound/Cardiology/Vascular Department, including hydrogen peroxide, formalin, and Cidex.
  • Be aware of the Global Harmonization System signs for hazardous materials and fire.
Responsibilities
  • Properly identify patients and the appropriate examination or modality while providing appropriate care.
  • Maintain the assigned area and ensure that required equipment and supplies are available.
  • Clean ultrasound rooms, beds, ultrasound equipment, and surfaces after each patient.
  • Wash hands before and after each examination in accordance with policy.
  • Follow policies concerning wounds and infections during examinations.
  • Assist sonographers in setting up ultrasound examinations and procedures.
  • Shadow or assist sonographic examinations and procedures under direct supervision.
  • Retrieve and transport patients and supplies for staff sonographers.
  • Prepare rooms and patients for examinations and obtain patient histories.
  • Clean equipment and transducers.
  • Answer the department phone, request prior reports and scripts, and arrange inpatient and stat appointments.
  • Set up trays using sterile techniques and gather supplies and paperwork for invasive procedures.
  • Assist radiologists, nurses, physicians, and physician assistants during procedures and cleanup using Universal Precautions and proper sharps disposal.
  • Transport laboratory samples to the laboratory after procedures.
