About the company

NRG Energy generates and sells electricity to homes and businesses across North America, pairing a large retail business with its own fleet of power plants. Its retail brands, including Reliant, Direct Energy and Green Mountain Energy, sell fixed-rate and variable-rate power plans, while its Vivint unit installs and monitors smart home security systems. NRG's natural gas, coal and nuclear plants sell power into wholesale markets and supply much of the electricity its retail customers use, which cushions it against swings in wholesale prices. It earns money from monthly power bills, smart home subscriptions and wholesale power and capacity sales. NRG was founded in 1989 and is based in Houston, Texas.

What believers are saying

  • Profits are climbing: East segment adjusted EBITDA rose $370 million year over year in the quarter ended June 2026.
  • Engineers get build work: T.H. Wharton, NRG's first new plant in nearly a decade, started in May 2026.
  • Smart home is a second engine: Vivint's second quarter 2026 adjusted EBITDA rose $42 million to $301 million.

What critics are saying

  • Many jobs are seasonal: 7,929 of NRG's 16,702 employees did largely seasonal smart home sales and installs.
  • Two more Texas builds must land: Cedar Bayou and Greens Bayou expansions were still under construction in August 2026.
  • Debt competes for cash: NRG plans $1 billion of debt repayment in 2026 after $4.9 billion of acquisition-related notes.

What makes NRG Energy unique

  • Data centers fund its plants: in August 2026, NRG agreed terms on a 1.2 GW Texas plant for a hyperscaler.
  • The LS Power deal doubled its fleet: 18 gas and dual-fuel plants, about 13 GW, joined in January 2026.
  • It pays businesses to use less power: CPower serves over 2,000 commercial and industrial customers.

TCEQ issues preliminary decision on NRG air permit for maypearl-area 1.2 GW Data Center power plant.

TCEQ issues preliminary decision on NRG air permit for maypearl-area 1.2 GW Data Center power plant. October 12, 2026, 14:00 GMT Air Quality Permit Moves Forward Despite Governor Abbott's Directive to Pause Data Center Project Approvals MAYPEARL, TX, UNITED STATES, October 12, 2026 / EINPresswire.com / - Along county roads and throughout neighborhoods between Maypearl, Itasca, and Grandview, Texas, hundreds of red and yellow "NO Data Center "signs appear on ranch fences, in front of homes, and outside local businesses, reflecting widespread community opposition to a proposed power plant and data center development on Farm-to-Market Road 66. More than 4,000 area residents have signed a petition opposing the facility. Residents welcomed Governor Abbott's recent directive to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to halt permitting of data center projects and his recent statements supporting local input. Days later, however, residents received letters from TCEQ evidencing TCEQ's preliminary decision to approve an air permit for NRG Prairie Energy Center LLC's 1.2 GW power plant. The Prairie Energy Center would be built and operated by NRG in rural Hill County to power a proposed 8 million-square-foot hyperscale data center. "Governor Abbott has been clear that Texans deserve a voice in these decisions. The Maypearl community is exactly who he was talking about, and we're asking that TCEQ honor his directive," said David Rogers, whose family's historic 152-year-old ranch would share a fence line with the proposed development. "This power plant is being proposed in the middle of a rural community that has clearly and repeatedly said we do not want it here," Rogers added. The proposed development would occupy approximately 2,850 acres and include: - 24 data center buildings totaling more than 8 million square feet - Approximately 2.5 GW of power demand - A 1.2 GW air-cooled natural gas power plant operated by NRG - Six electrical substations - An onsite wastewater facility discharging into Chambers Creek Despite the scale of the project, residents have struggled to get basic information about it. NRG labeled its emissions calculations "trade secrets," keeping them from public review, and much of what has since been released remains heavily redacted. "NRG has done nothing to reach out to our community, despite statements made during a recent investor call about wanting to be a good partner in the communities where it operates," said Tim McKibben, whose family ranch is located across F.M. 66 from the proposed site. "Projects like this permanently change the landscape of rural Texas, and our community deserves a say before that happens," McKibben added. NRG appears to have strategically located the proposed power plant in Hill County, about 800 feet from the Ellis County line, where it avoids the stricter pollution controls of the Dallas-Fort Worth nonattainment area that would apply just across the line. Residents are concerned that the TCEQ permitting process is continuing despite Governor Abbott's recent directive. "We're not going anywhere. This community has been here for generations, and we intend to protect it for generations to come," stated McKibben. "We appreciate Governor Abbott's directive, and we're asking the TCEQ to follow it." For a map and additional information, visit MaypearlDataCenter.com. Key takeaways. * FERC accepted but suspended PJM Interconnection's one-time Reliability Backstop Procurement plan until 2027/02/28, delaying potential near-term capacity revenue for NRG Energy and keeping PJM reform risk on the table. * Shares of NRG Energy traded lower after FERC froze PJM's reliability backstop for five months while it reviews whether cost allocation is unjust and unreasonable. * Scotiabank cut its NRG Energy price target to $162 from $211 but kept a Sector Outperform rating, with the broader Street still overweight and a mean target near $190.93. * Morgan Stanley trimmed its NRG Energy target to $159 from $162 and maintained Equal Weight in a sector-wide reset after utilities and IPPs lagged the S&P and 2026-2028 power prices turned mixed. * NRG Energy joined AES, National Grid and Constellation Energy in the AI Energy Management Alliance, tying its future to flexible AI data centers and new grid-scale demand. Live Update At 16:46:54 EDT: On Wednesday, October 07, 2026 NRG Energy Inc. stock [NYSE: NRG] is trending up by 5.69%! Discover the key drivers behind this movement as well as its expert analysis in the detailed breakdown below. Quick financial overview. NRG Energy has been trading like a strong uptrender that just hit a speed bump. Over the past couple of weeks, NRG climbed from the mid-$90s to close near $108.61 on 2026/10/07, with intraday action showing steady dip-buying from the $101 open up through the afternoon grind. That tight 5-minute tape between roughly $104 and $110 shows controlled, not panicked, trading. Fundamentally, NRG Energy is a high-revenue, low-margin machine. The company generated roughly $30.7B in annual revenue with a solid 35.3% gross margin, but only about a 5.1% EBIT margin and roughly 2% net margin. For traders, that means small changes in pricing, regulation, or fuel costs can swing earnings fast. The latest quarterly numbers back up the story. NRG Energy booked about $7.48B in revenue and $506M in net income, throwing off $1.12B in operating cash flow and roughly $738M in free cash flow. Those are big cash figures, but they sit on top of heavy leverage: long-term debt of about $21.7B and a total debt-to-equity ratio above 5. That debt load, plus a P/E near 25 and price-to-cash-flow around 4.6, tells traders NRG is priced like a quality cash generator but still sensitive to rate moves and regulatory shocks. Why traders are watching NRG around PJM and AI. The main near-term story for NRG Energy is Washington, not weather. FERC just accepted PJM Interconnection's Reliability Backstop Procurement framework, then immediately suspended it until 2027/02/28. That one move kicked the can on capacity revenues that many traders expected to show up earlier in NRG's numbers. For a power player like NRG Energy, PJM's backstop plan matters because it was designed to accelerate new capacity to meet rising load, especially as electrification and data-center demand ramp. The delay doesn't kill that upside, but it pushes it out and muddies the math. FERC also raised red flags around whether the cost allocation is "unjust and unreasonable." Translation for traders: the economics of the whole scheme are still up for negotiation. That's why NRG Energy traded lower on the headlines. When regulators question who pays what, models for PJM-exposed names like NRG, Constellation Energy and Talen Energy get haircuts. Short-term, traders are likely to fade spikes as long as this overhang is unresolved. But the Street is not abandoning NRG Energy. Scotiabank slashed its target from $211 to $162, a major reset, yet still calls the stock Sector Outperform and sees upside versus peers. The broader analyst crowd is overweight with an average target just under $191, signaling they still like NRG on a 12-month view even as numbers come down. Morgan Stanley's move is more muted. It nudged its NRG Energy target from $162 to $159 and held Equal Weight, framing the weakness as part of a broader utilities and IPP slump after underperformance versus the S&P and mixed 2026-2028 forward power prices. To active traders, that says NRG's drag is part company, part macro. On the opportunity side, NRG Energy is positioning where the next big load wave is forming: AI. By joining AES, National Grid and Constellation Energy in the AI Energy Management Alliance, NRG is tying itself to flexible AI data centers, colocated generation and storage, and policies that reward flexible AI demand. That may not move tomorrow's candle, but it gives a clear long-term growth narrative beyond regulated PJM battles. Conclusion. NRG Energy sits at the crossroads of two big themes: messy regulation and explosive data-center demand. The PJM reliability backstop saga shows how one FERC order can knock a few dollars off NRG in a day by pushing capacity revenue out to 2027 and questioning cost allocation. For short-term traders, that uncertainty means NRG is a headline-driven stock, especially around any new FERC or PJM filings. At the same time, the core business of NRG Energy still generates serious cash. Margins are thin, but $1.12B in quarterly operating cash flow and strong returns on equity near the mid-20% range show why the market is willing to pay up, even with a heavy $21B-plus debt stack. The Street's stance reinforces that message: Scotiabank's cut to $162 and Morgan Stanley's trim to $159 reset expectations, but overweight and Outperform ratings keep NRG in many watchlists. Longer term, NRG Energy's move into the AI Energy Management Alliance ties its future to where power demand is racing, not shrinking. Traders who follow Tim Sykes' mindset will remember his line: "The market doesn't care about your opinion, it cares about catalysts and timing." As Tim Bohen, lead trainer with StocksToTrade says, "If you're still guessing at the end of your analysis, it's probably not a trade worth taking.". For NRG, the key catalysts are clear - FERC's next steps on PJM, forward power price trends, and concrete wins in AI-driven energy deals. SilverEdge cooperative. Is NRG Energy stock underperforming the S&P 500? Kritika Sarmah Barchart 1 hour ago Headquartered in Houston, Texas, NRG Energy, Inc. (NRG) is a Fortune 500 energy company serving millions of customers across the U.S. and Canada. It operates power generation and natural gas businesses while providing smart energy solutions for homes and businesses through a portfolio of consumer brands. The company has a market capitalization of approximately $21.8 billion. Companies valued between $10 billion and $200 billion are generally classified as "large-cap stocks," and NRG Energy comfortably fits this category. Its substantial market capitalization reflects its size, influence and established presence in the independent power producers and utilities industry. NRG Energy stands out by combining retail energy with smart home services. Its diverse power generation and natural gas portfolio provides scale and diversification, while its 8 million customers create a broad customer base. Despite these notable advantages, NRG is currently 45.9% below its 52-week high of $189.96, reached on February 25, 2026. Over the past three months, NRG shares have declined 26%, compared with the S&P 500's ($SPX) 5.4% gain during the same period. NRG shares have declined 35.5% year-to-date and 39.9% over the past year, trailing the S&P 500's 13.4% year-to-date gain and 16.6% return over the same period. NRG has traded below its 200-day moving average since late April and slipped below its 50-day moving average in early August, pointing to weakening momentum in the near term. NRG Energy's weaker stock performance may reflect investor caution following its second-quarter results and the integration of its recently acquired LS Power portfolio. On August 4, 2026, NRG reported adjusted net income of $315 million, down 7.1% year over year, while adjusted earnings fell 13.9% year over year to $1.49 per share. Revenue rose 11% year over year to $7.48 billion, while the company reaffirmed its full-year adjusted EPS guidance of $7.90 to $9.90. Following the results, NRG shares dropped 15.5% on the same day. The company's acquisition of 13 GW of power generation assets from LS Power, along with CPower, significantly increased its scale but also required additional debt financing, potentially adding to concerns about leverage and interest costs. Despite these pressures, NRG continues to report solid operating performance and maintain its long-term growth outlook. Within the competitive independent power producers and utilities industry, rival Constellation Energy Corporation (CEG) has also declined but has outperformed NRG, with shares down 25.4% year-to-date and 24.1% over the past 52 weeks. Wall Street analysts remain bullish on NRG's prospects. The stock carries a consensus "Strong Buy" rating among the 22 analysts covering it, while the mean price target of $191.80 implies 86.7% upside from current levels. NRG challenges PJM's reliability plan over pricing concerns amid $13GW acquisition

NRG Energy, through affiliate NRG Business Marketing, filed a limited protest with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission challenging two elements of PJM Interconnection's proposed Reliability Backstop Procurement for capacity shortfalls in the 2027/2028 and 2028/2029 delivery years. NRG argues that PJM's proposed soft cap and price-taker requirement could misalign with current resource costs and distort future market pricing. The filing comes as NRG pursues its acquisition of LS Power, which would add 13 gigawatts of quick-start gas generation and 6 gigawatts of virtual power plant capacity in markets including PJM and ERCOT. The protest underscores NRG's focus on reliability and capacity markets as future EBITDA drivers. NRG's narrative projects $38.1 billion revenue and $2.6 billion earnings by 2029, requiring 5.6% yearly revenue growth.
