Responsibilities
  • Lead delivery of the Engineering Design Record and associated activities within the Portfolio Systems team.
  • Engage with senior stakeholders across the business to define, agree, and verify Portfolio requirements across programmes, equipment teams, centres of excellence, and functional teams.
  • Support Systems Team work packages involving intellectual property, test and evaluation facilities, MBDA supplier databases, and systems studies exploring technical trade-offs.
  • Develop and lead junior colleagues.
  • Present work at the Joint MOD/MBDA Portfolio Engineering Working Group.
  • Travel within the United Kingdom to other MBDA sites as required.
  • Support wider Portfolio factors including platform integration, financial efficiencies, operational performance, exportability, obsolescence, and Freedom of Action for the UK Ministry of Defence.

Nick Lester, Chief Engineer Structures & Certification within the Aerospace & Defence division of Morson Praxis, has been appointed Head of Airworthiness for the Morson Praxis UK CAA DOA, taking on the safety-critical remit alongside his existing role. The Morson Praxis UK CAA DOA enables us to independently design, analyse and certify modifications to civil aircraft structures, cabins, electrical, and avionic systems across both large and small aircraft and rotorcraft. Nick's appointment recognises his extensive experience across aerospace engineering, structural integrity and airworthiness, while reinforcing the close alignment between Morson Praxis' engineering capability and the evolving regulatory landscape that governs civil aviation safety. A former Chief Stress Engineer at MBDA, Nick has held senior engineering positions supporting major aerospace programmes during his 21-year aviation engineering career, including development of the CAMM-ER missile and the Landceptor defence system, design of the Airbus A350 Wing Fixed Leading and Trailing Edges, Type Certification and subsequent modifications to the AW189 helicopter, and development of the Bloodhound supersonic car. In his current role as Chief Engineer Structures & Certification at Morson Praxis, Nick is responsible for technical quality across a range of aerospace programmes, supporting organisations including Vertical Aerospace, Leonardo Helicopters, DRAKEN Europe and Marshall Aerospace. As Head of Airworthiness within the DOA, Nick will play an important role in helping ensure aircraft design, modification and certification activities continue to meet the UK CAA's rigorous safety and regulatory requirements. The position provides technical oversight of airworthiness compliance, engineering assurance and regulatory alignment, while acting as a key interface with the Civil Aviation Authority on matters relating to airworthiness and aviation safety. TT Electronics powers ahead in contracts and technology for aerospace & defense. TT Electronics announced it has recently signed two major agreements for power electronics solutions in aerospace and defense markets - one with MBDA Italia and the other with Rolls-Royce. These come shortly after it showcased its latest power conversion technology - including Altitude DC for power conversion in electrified aircraft - at the Farnborough International Air Show held in late July. The MBDA Italia deal, depicted above, was announced August 11. The two companies have signed a letter of intent that strengthens their collaboration and provides a platform to explore future opportunities. The agreement reflects a shared commitment to innovation and builds on a long-standing industrial relationship between the two companies. MBDA Italia acts as the Italian arm of the broader MBDA group, handling relationships and contracts directly with the Italian Ministry of Defense. The parent MBDA Group is a joint venture owned by three major European aerospace and defense leaders: Airbus (37.5%), BAE Systems (37.5%), and Leonardo (25%). The company develops missile technologies and weapon systems for air, sea and land armed forces. In London on August 4, TT Electronics announced a significant development in its long-standing partnership with Rolls-Royce. Under the transformative multi-million pound agreement, TT Electronics' Bedlington and Barnstaple facilities will supply, high-reliability power electronics solutions for all large civil aircraft engines over their operational lifetime. As the technology that governs how each engine runs, TT Electronics' multi-chip power modules and precision magnetics are mission-critical components for the aircraft. Rob Relph, Executive Vice President, Power Division at TT Electronics, commented: "This agreement is a reflection of the trust we've built together in the UK over four decades and our shared ambition to advance technology and improve engine performance." Advanced power electronics capabilities highlighted at Farnborough Airshow At the Farnborough show held in late July at Hampshire in southern England, TT Electronics emphasized how its engineering teams support projects from early-stage design through to manufacturing and system integration, with solutions ranging from off-the-shelf products and configurable platforms to customized designs. Two products took center stage in the presentation at Farnborough - Altitude DC, a high-voltage DC-DC converter technology designed to deliver high power density for aerospace applications where space, weight and performance are critical; and the AX-Force family of bidirectional and tridirectional power converters for aerospace and defense applications in combat vehicle electrification, propulsion systems and other mission-critical equipment. The display also covered its planar and ALM magnetic components, and complex PCB assemblies. As the aerospace industry shifts towards hybrid, electric and hydrogen-powered aircraft, the demand for innovative, high-voltage power conversion solutions also rises. The Altitude DC product is designed to address this challenge. "[Next-generation] aircraft face significant restrictions in range and payload capacity... Although they offer zero emissions during flight, their limited range makes them suitable only for short-haul flights currently. Extending their range without compromising performance is a key focus of our R&D efforts," notes Julian Thomas, Engineering Director at TT Electronics. OEMs face a major hurdle in developing sustainable aircraft: achieving sufficient energy density in storage systems, especially at altitudes between 15,000 and 50,000 feet. Traditional power converters contribute to excess weight, diminishing aircraft performance and efficiency. Furthermore, the lengthy turnaround time for power converter design and qualification - often exceeding two years - hinders the rapid pace of aerospace innovation. As well as arcing issues, traditional power converters can weigh too much for aerospace use while not offering the performance or efficiency required. Bespoke solutions can take two years or more for the completion of the design and the required certification process, which slows down innovation. Off-the-shelf solutions are not really an option either, as they can be uneconomical in such a low volume industry, where each manufacturer has its own particular set of requirements. TT Electronics is attempting to bridge the gap between bespoke and off-the-shelf designs by offering manufacturers the best of both worlds; modular designs that are intended to be easy to customize. James Alderson has joined as project director, bringing more than 37 years of experience in the built environment sector. Alderson previously worked as project director on the £120m Stopford Park regeneration in Stockport and has held senior roles at Cityheart, Investar Property Group, Mulbury, Arcadis and Grosvenor. Nathan Chase has rejoined Muse as senior project manager after leading capital investment projects for MBDA UK. Nick Self joins with more than a decade of experience in the property sector, most recently working with Peabody Group in London where he delivered hundreds of new homes in Thamesmead. Ben Taylor has joined from Renaker, bringing experience in high-rise residential developments across Manchester. In the Twenty-Fifth Report of the Standing Committee on Defence (2025-26), tabled in the Lok Sabha, the Ministry outlined its roadmap for securing next-generation aerial combat capabilities. 'The Ministry of Defence has initiated efforts in a concerted manner to co-join the 6th Generation Fighter Aircraft Development Programme viz. Future Combat Air System (FCAS) spearheaded by the French Government,' the MoD stated in its submission to the panel. The report, which details 'Action Taken' by the government on recommendations regarding Demands for Grants for 2026-27, highlights India's intent to leapfrog from current 4.5 and 5th generation platforms to 6th generation technology. Meanwhile, in a significant development in the 114 Rafale jet deal, France has submitted its detailed technical and commercial proposal to India for the deal, which will include large-scale local manufacturing and production of the multi-role combat aircraft. The Rafale aircraft are likely to become one of the mainstays of the Indian Air Force in future and were chosen in 2012 by the Defence Ministry after a long global competition. The French officials have submitted their response to the Indian Letter of Request for buying 114 Rafale multirole fighter jets, and it is being studied by the Acquisition Wing of the Defence Ministry and the Indian Air Force, Defence sources told ANI. The Indian side would be closely analysing the French response to Indian demand for integrating Indian weapons like the variants of the Astra air-to-air missiles and indigenous content in the aircraft under the deal, they said. The French side has to manufacture 94 out of the 114 aircraft in india with a local industry partner, and this would be done by all the partners of the French Dassault Aviation, including missile manufacturer MBDA, engine maker Safran and Thales. A significant amount of indigenisation is expected in the deal, which is likely to provide opportunities worth around Rs 1.6 lakh crore to Indian industry players including Tata, Larsen and Toubro and others.
