Atlas Data Storage encodes binary data into DNA by mapping data to the four-letter alphabet (A, C, G, T) and stores it as dry powder inside rugged steel capsules. Its core technology, licensed from Twist Bioscience, uses a silicon-based semiconductor platform to miniaturize DNA synthesis and enable massively parallel chemistry on a chip. Data is kept in air-gapped capsules for durability, density, and security, and the company offers storage as a service to enterprises such as hyperscalers and regulated industries. Its first commercial service, Atlas Eon 100, launched in December 2025 for permanent data preservation, aiming to provide long-term, low-maintenance archival storage.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • imec invested in Atlas on March 5, 2026, adding fabrication credibility and capital.
  • TSMC selected Atlas for its April 22, 2026 Technology Symposium Innovation Zone.
  • Atlas pitches air-gapped, durable archival storage as enterprises face exploding AI data retention demands.

What critics are saying

  • Atlas still lacks disclosed customer revenue after the December 2025 Eon 100 launch.
  • DNA storage economics remain unproven; sequencing speed and per-terabyte costs can crush adoption by 2027.
  • A failed commercialization leaves Atlas dependent on investor capital and Twist royalties for survival.

What makes Atlas Data Storage unique

  • Atlas spun out from Twist Bioscience in May 2025 with licensed DNA-synthesis IP.
  • Varun Mehta and Bill Banyai combine storage-scale systems experience with DNA manufacturing expertise.
  • Atlas Eon 100, launched December 2, 2025, targets permanent archival storage.
