Requirements
- Graduate of a CCNE-accredited nursing program with a Master's Degree in Nursing for the nurse practitioner pathway.
- National certification by one of the recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Certification Centers is required for the nurse practitioner pathway.
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia is required for the nurse practitioner pathway.
- A Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant is required for the physician assistant pathway.
- Graduation from an ARC-PA-approved Physician Assistant training program is required.
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants is required.
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine is required for physician assistants.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is required, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department's discretion.
- Eligible new graduates will be considered.

- The role requires the ability to work protracted or irregular hours and around biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased persons, water, and electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
Responsibilities
- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for hospitalized patients and their families during inpatient hospitalization and immediate post-discharge planning.
- Complete daily rounds, consultations, and pre-procedure evaluations.
- Complete integrated assessments.
- Order additional tests or consultations in collaboration with hospitalist faculty or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Perform diagnostic tests and communicate results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal patient evaluation findings.
- Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
- Facilitate patient discharge by coordinating services and tests needed for outpatient follow-up appointments.
- Develop individualized plans of care that include teaching, discharge planning, and referrals to other healthcare team members.
- Provide care for patients across the age continuum within the scope of education and certification.
- Identify unstable or complex hospitalized-patient situations and facilitate appropriate interventions.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
- Evaluate general medicine patients and coordinate ambulatory follow-up, procedures, and tests when applicable.
- Assist with collecting outcome measures when applicable.
- Apply critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning to identify, evaluate, and manage the needs of patients and families.
- Use equipment safely.
- Base clinical decisions and actions on scientific principles, standards of care, and research findings.
- Provide education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community using appropriate teaching strategies.
- Promote an environment that supports patient and family learning preferences, priorities, and readiness.
- Maintain and update professional knowledge throughout the year.
- Complete identified clinical competencies.
- Serve as a resource for staff caring for hospitalized patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel within the area of expertise.
- Participate in community programs and distribute literature when appropriate.
- Document plans of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in each patient's medical record according to hospital and WVUM policies.
- Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve improvements in patient outcomes.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in the cardiology practice that improve patient outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to solve problems and provide professional support.
- Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary patient-care, program-development, and education approaches.
- Serve as a professional role model.
- Promote innovation in the expanded role of inpatient and ambulatory care delivery.
- Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
- Document hours and submit billing reports when appropriate.
- Review and interpret cardiology data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
- Assist hospitalist faculty, administrators, and directors with collecting outcome measures.
- Perform other assigned duties and projects.
Desired Qualifications
- Acute care or hospitalist experience is preferred.
- Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification is preferred, although Family Nurse Practitioners will be considered.
- Master's-level education as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant is preferred.
