Software Engineering PhD Intern

• Research, conceive and develop software applications to extend and improve on Google's product offering.
• Contribute to a wide variety of projects using natural language processing, artificial intelligence, data compression, machine learning, and search technologies.
• Collaborate on scalability issues involing access to data and information.
• Utilise exposure to large-scale production software troubleshooting.
• Help maintain mission critical services.

Minimum qualifications:

• Currently enrolled in a PhD degree in Computer Science or a related technical field in the EMEA region, and in your penultimate/final year of education.
• Experience working with data structures or algorithms during coursework/projects, research, internships, or practical experience in school or work (e.g., open-source coding).
• Experience with one or more general purpose programming languages (e.g., Java, C/C++, Python, JavaScript, Go, etc.).

Preferred qualifications:

• Relevant practical or internship experience (e.g., research assistant, teaching assistant, personal projects, etc) with programming in either: C++, Java, Python, or Go.
• Research experience in algorithms, architecture, artificial intelligence, compilers, database, data mining, distributed systems, machine learning, networking, or systems.
• Relevant practical or internship experience with one or more of the following: web application development, Unix/Linux, mobile application development, distributed and parallel systems, machine learning, information retrieval, NLP, networking, developing large software systems, or security software development.
• Ability to complete a 13-17 week full-time internship in Switzerland or Germany starting in either May, June or July 2027.

Software Engineering Intern:

As a key member of a versatile team, you will work on a specific project critical to Google’s needs. You will design, test, deploy and maintain software solutions as you grow and evolve during your internship.

Site Reliability Intern:
Our engineers create, fix, extend and scale the code to keep it working and to harden it against all the bad actors of the internet. We drive reliability and performance on a massive scale. You will work on software development projects to keep important business generating-critical systems up and running, from code-level troubleshooting of traffic anomalies to maintenance of our services; from monitoring and alerts to building automation infrastructure.

This internship is intended for students enrolled in their penultimate/final year of education in an accredited full-time PhD degree program located in the EMEA region. Participation in the internship program requires that you are located in Switzerland or Germany for the duration of the internship program. Interns will be required to be available to work full-time for a minimum of 13 weeks over the Summer 2027 (starting in either May, June or July) for the duration of the program.
