  • Deep practical knowledge of capital markets operations and the risks inherent in high-volume, multi-asset-class trading and financing environments.
  • Ability to simplify complex issues, communicate clearly, and translate risk insights into practical management action.
Responsibilities
  • Act as the principal Business Risk Management representative and senior risk advisor for Markets Operations globally.
  • Advise senior business leaders on operational risk, control effectiveness, strategic change, and resiliency.
  • Partner with Front Office, Operations, Technology, and control-function leaders to identify emerging risks, challenge business and operating decisions, and strengthen controls across the trade lifecycle.
  • Provide constructive and credible challenge to business decisions, transformation programs, new or changing activities, and management assessments of risk.
  • Lead executive discussions concerning significant operational events, control weaknesses, remediation priorities, and emerging risk themes.
  • Represent Business Risk Management in relevant risk governance forums.
  • Drive consistent risk management expectations and practices across global Markets Operations locations.
  • Provide risk advisory coverage across operational processes supporting Foreign Exchange and Financing and Portfolio Solutions businesses.
  • Assess risks and controls across the end-to-end trade lifecycle, including pre-trade activities, trade capture and validation, confirmations, settlement, collateral and margin operations, reconciliations, cash processing, asset servicing, client reporting, and exception management.
  • Provide risk advisory and credible challenge over client onboarding processes, including governance, operational readiness, data quality, system setup, control execution, and escalation of material risks or exceptions.
  • Challenge the design, execution, and sustainability of preventive, detective, and compensating controls across critical operational workflows.
  • Partner with Operations leadership to identify control gaps, manual-process dependencies, capacity constraints, data-quality concerns, and operational vulnerabilities before they result in material events.
  • Promote scalable processes, workflow automation, data-driven monitoring, leading indicators, and exception-based management to reduce operational risk and human error.
  • Provide risk input into operating model changes, technology implementations, process migrations, product launches, outsourcing arrangements, and other strategic initiatives.
  • Promote timely identification, escalation, investigation, and governance of operational incidents, near misses, losses, and control failures.
  • Provide senior challenge of impact assessments, root cause analyses, corrective actions, issue ratings, and target dates.
  • Ensure remediation plans address underlying causes, deliver measurable risk reduction, and include appropriate interim or compensating controls where necessary.
  • Monitor significant issues through closure and challenge whether corrective actions are sustainable and operating as intended.
  • Identify cross-business themes and use lessons learned to strengthen controls beyond the immediate event or process.
  • Provide oversight and challenge across first-line risk programs, including Risk and Control Self-Assessments, control inventories, Key Risk Indicators, operational risk events, issue management, operational resilience, third-party risk, and risk change management.
  • Use management information, risk metrics, event data, assurance results, and thematic analysis to identify areas requiring management attention.
  • Lead the monthly Markets Operations Risk Steering Committee, ensuring transparent reporting, effective management challenge, and timely escalation of material risks, control performance, significant incidents, remediation progress, and emerging concerns.
  • Help ensure adherence to applicable first-line policies, standards, governance requirements, and escalation protocols.
  • Lead first-line risk advisory engagement supporting regulatory examinations, internal audits, independent assurance reviews, and control testing involving Markets Operations.
  • Challenge the quality, completeness, and sustainability of management responses and remediation plans arising from findings or observations.
  • Assess whether proposed corrective actions address root causes and appropriately reduce residual operational risk.
  • Support ongoing examination and audit readiness, including clear evidence of ownership, governance, control execution, and sustained remediation.
  • Partner with Compliance, Enterprise Risk Management, Internal Audit, Legal, and other control functions while maintaining clear first-line accountability.
  • Lead, develop, and retain a high-performing team of Business Risk Advisors and operational subject matter experts.
  • Set clear priorities, standards, and accountabilities while creating an inclusive environment that encourages constructive challenge and escalation.
  • Build stronger operational and product expertise across the broader Business Risk Management organization.
  • Create effective partnerships across India and the global Markets organization and influence outcomes without relying solely on formal authority.

  • Direct operational leadership exposure to Foreign Exchange and Securities Lending, with broader experience supporting trading and securitized financing businesses.
  • Experience working in a highly regulated global financial institution and engaging with regulators, auditors, or independent assurance teams.
  • Prior experience in Business Risk Management, Business Controls, Operational Risk, Internal Audit, Compliance, or a comparable first-line control function.
  • Experience with globally distributed operating models and leading teams across regions and cultures.
  • Executive presence, sound judgment, and the ability to challenge constructively while sustaining trusted business partnerships.
  • A proactive mindset focused on early risk identification, clear escalation, and prevention of material events.
  • Strategic thinking combined with disciplined execution and close attention to detail.

State Street names Tim Helyar as head of Asia Pacific. Helyar succeeds Lochiel Crafter, who recently retired, and reports to Stefan Gmuer, head of International. 9 September 2026 State Street Corporation today appointed Tim Helyar as head of Asia Pacific, effective immediately, supporting the company's regional growth strategy. Based in Hong Kong, Helyar (pictured) will oversee State Street's Asia Pacific business strategy, partnering with country, functional and business leaders to strengthen governance, deepen client and regulator engagement and accelerate regional growth.
