Requirements
- A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.
- Five years of experience working in heavy Department of Transportation underground utility construction is required.
- At least two years of experience supervising pipe or culvert installation on heavy civil jobs is required.
- At least three recent years of experience working as a working Pipe Foreman is required.
- A valid driver's license and satisfactory motor vehicle record are required.
- Ability to read and accurately interpret construction drawings, blueprints, and plans.
- Thorough knowledge and proven skill working with underground utility pipelines for water, sewer, and drainage.
- Ability to manage others and complete jobs on time.
- Ability to perform, demonstrate, and inspect proper laying of sanitary sewer gravity pipe from 4 inches to 24 inches.
- Ability to perform, demonstrate, and inspect proper laying of pressure pipes ranging from 4 inches up to 36 inches with fittings.
- Ability to multitask and work under short time constraints.
- Ability to perform manual work requiring extensive physical exertion, including standing, walking, twisting, bending, handling objects, reaching outward and above the head and shoulders, climbing, squatting, kneeling, and lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, moving, or dragging objects on flat ground or steep slopes.
- Ability to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 pounds and occasionally lift objects weighing over 50 pounds.
- Excellent agility, focus, balance, manual dexterity, and hand, eye, and foot coordination.
- Ability to hear and comprehend oral instructions in a noisy environment.
- Good vision, depth perception, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.
- Must own a basic set of hand tools.
Responsibilities
- Study project specifications with the project superintendent to plan procedures for pipe installation sequencing.
- Coordinate and supervise the daily activities of the pipe crew.
- Direct and operate assigned heavy equipment to excavate, install, and backfill large pipe and culvert.
- Inspect work sites to determine the sequencing and method of pipe installation and identify potential hazards or safety concerns.
- Maintain crew safety and enforce company policies.
- Plan drain pipe installation to reduce interference with other project activities and the traveling public.
- Establish a safe work environment that complies with Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards and the company safety program.
- Comply with federal, state, and company environmental policies.
- Observe assigned equipment to detect machinery malfunctions and operate machinery to verify repairs.
- Inspect work to ensure workmanship conforms to specifications and construction schedules are followed.
- Use lasers, grade rods, eye levels, and transit levels to set the appropriate grade for pipe installation.
- Review employee timecards using HeavyJob.
- Produce and plan all types of pipe installation.
- Work outdoors in extreme heat, humidity, uneven surfaces, and natural terrain, frequently near moving machinery and wet or vibrating conditions.
- Work near fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and electrical-shock hazards when required.
- Travel, work away from home for extended periods, and work occasional nights and weekends when required.
