About the job

Requirements
  • Hands-on production experience with managed relational databases in AWS or GCP, specifically RDS/Aurora or Cloud SQL using MySQL or PostgreSQL.
  • Experience administering at least one self-managed enterprise relational database management system in Linux/Unix environments, specifically Oracle or IBM DB2 LUW, or strong evidence of ability to ramp quickly.
  • Strong performance-tuning skills, including execution plans, indexing strategy, slow-query analysis, concurrency, and connection management.
  • High availability and disaster recovery expertise, including replication, failover runbooks, backups, point-in-time recovery, and setting and meeting recovery time and recovery point objectives.
  • Automation experience or capability with Terraform or CloudFormation, Ansible, CI/CD for schema changes using Flyway or Liquibase, Git, and scripting in Python or Bash.
  • Security and compliance fundamentals, including identity and access management, encryption in transit and at rest, auditing, and familiarity with PCI-DSS and GDPR.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate, coach teams, and document best practices.
Responsibilities
  • Operate, optimize, and secure managed and self-managed databases powering high-traffic ecommerce sites across AWS and GCP, with support for hosted and on-premises databases.
  • Operate cloud databases including AWS RDS/Aurora with MySQL or PostgreSQL, Google Cloud SQL, DynamoDB, MongoDB, DB2, and Oracle; perform indexing, query plan analysis, OLTP schema design, connection-pool tuning, and concurrency tuning.
  • Build and support self-managed databases on hosted systems, on-premises systems, and virtual machines, including Oracle 19c, IBM DB2 LUW 9.5–11.5, MySQL/MariaDB, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB on Linux, Unix, and Windows; install, patch, upgrade, tune parameters and kernels, manage storage layouts such as ASM/LVM, and perform backup and restore.
  • Implement and support high availability, resilience, and disaster recovery for cloud databases using Multi-AZ, read replicas, Aurora Global Database, cross-region replication, RDS Proxy, point-in-time recovery, snapshots, and tested recovery time and recovery point objectives.
  • Implement and support self-managed database resilience using Oracle Data Guard and/or RAC, DB2 HADR, MySQL replication/Group Replication/XtraDB Cluster, MongoDB replica sets and sharding, RMAN, XtraBackup, and DB2 backup utilities.
  • Support production and non-production environments with backup and restore and sensitive-data obfuscation.
  • Write SQL and PL/SQL code.
  • Automate cloud and self-managed database operations using Terraform or CloudFormation, Ansible, GitOps workflows, and CI/CD for database changes with Flyway or Liquibase; establish standards, detect configuration drift, and automate patching and failover.
  • Provide observability and performance engineering using CloudWatch, Cloud Monitoring, RDS Performance Insights, pg_stat_statements, MySQL Performance Schema, Oracle AWR/ASH/Statspack/OEM, DB2 MON/Explain, Datadog, New Relic, Prometheus, and Grafana.
  • Perform capacity planning and peak-event load/soak testing; define latency, availability, and throughput SLOs; conduct post-incident reviews.
  • Apply security, compliance, and governance controls, including least-privilege IAM, secrets management with AWS Secrets Manager or HashiCorp Vault, audit logging, PCI-DSS and GDPR controls, data retention and masking, and change control and approvals.
  • Manage cloud cost and capacity through instance, storage, and IOPS rightsizing; reserved, on-demand, and serverless choices; DynamoDB capacity modes; and cost anomaly detection.
  • Manage self-hosted database capacity forecasting and scaling plans, with basic license awareness for enterprise platforms.
  • Collaborate on schema evolution, query patterns, caching strategies using Redis or Memcached, and read/write segregation.
  • Guide ORM usage and connection pools and advise on patterns for microservices and event-driven systems using Kafka, Kinesis, or Pub/Sub.
  • Partner with development, support, and architecture teams; maintain runbooks and documentation.
  • Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation, lead incident response, and take preventative actions.
  • Support and plan migrations between self-managed and managed services with validation and rollback paths.
Desired Qualifications
  • Deep Oracle expertise, including RAC and Data Guard; DB2 HADR; or advanced PostgreSQL/MySQL internals.
  • Experience with MongoDB Atlas and on-premises MongoDB, including Ops Manager/backup, replica sets, and sharding.
  • Experience with Redis/Memcached (ElastiCache/Memorystore), Kafka/Kinesis/Pub/Sub, or Kubernetes-based application stacks.
  • Exposure to BigQuery or Snowflake for operational reporting.
  • Experience migrating legacy database estates to managed services with minimal downtime.
