DropGenie raises $5 million USD backed by BDC to speed up biological discovery.

DropGenie raises $5 million USD backed by BDC to speed up biological discovery. Montréal and Boston-based biotech startup aims to draw more data out of small samples. From a single drop of blood, you can find a whole world of biological information. One biotech startup is hoping that its miniaturized technology can make scientific research easier and more efficient, even when very little patient material is available. DropGenie, based in Montréal and Boston, is betting its approach can help the pharmaceutical industry develop more therapies. The company announced on Monday morning that it has brought in BDC Capital's Thrive Fund as a new investor for its seed-plus financing, bringing the total equity round to $5 million USD ($7 million CAD). Massachusetts-based Skeleton Key had led that financing, alongside Merck Global Health Innovation Fund and CQDM, with participation from Montréal's Real Ventures and Anges Québec. DropGenie hopes to make personalized medicines possible "by doing the somewhat unsexy work of creating... automation systems." Alison Hirukawa, DropGenie Founded in 2018, DropGenie began when CEO Alison Hirukawa met her co-founders, who were working on a digital microfluidics platform. The platform used electrical signals to manipulate very small amounts of liquid to accomplish typical lab tasks. Hirukawa, who was a postdoctoral fellow at McGill University's Goodman Cancer Research Centre, met Hugo Sinha, Philippe Vo, and Mathieu Husser (who is no longer with the company) through a McGill-associated research project; the team decided to combine their technology with synthetic biology techniques to try to speed up the research process. "A lot of work in the early stages of discovery is extremely artisanal," Hirukawa said in an interview with BetaKit. "You'd have a PhD student doing a lot of manual work, and you're extremely constrained by...material from a patient, which is very finite." The startup plans to use the funding to drive commercialization of its first product, which puts gene editing on a tiny chip. The advantage is that it uses up to 100 times fewer cells, as well as less reagent - often expensive chemicals necessary for experiments - than traditional tests. Since CRISPR gene-editing technology was first successfully applied in 2013, scientists have used it as a tool to test which genes are responsible for certain traits or diseases. When doing a genetic screening, sometimes researchers must use CRISPR to edit genes - according to the company, DropGenie's method requires 100 times less volume than existing methods. But how does DropGenie's tech do this? Hirukawa said it's all about scaling samples "down into a droplet." Instead of transporting small sample liquids into different lab machines to do an experiment, it all happens on a small chip with a tiny amount of liquid. "A lot of reagents and materials in that world are super bespoke or expensive," she said. "Bringing down the volume and the amount of input required completely changes the cost profile." That's an attractive proposition for its target customers, who are heavy hitters in the pharmaceutical industry. So far, DropGenie has formed partnerships with AbbVie, UCB Pharma, as well as life science instrument companies like Danaher and Sartorius. There's another way DropGenie's tech could prove valuable in the age of AI. Many companies are using AI models to enhance and speed up drug discovery, and for that, they need a lot of high-quality data. With its faster screening methods, DropGenie "generates the high-quality, human-relevant data those models need," BDC Thrive Fund managing director Mona Minhas said in a statement. DropGenie hopes to sell its automated lab workflows as a service with a commercial launch in the second quarter of next year. It also wants to ink more data partnerships and grow its 10-person team, split between offices in Montréal and Cambridge, Mass. "Where we want this to go is unlocking new therapies," Hirukawa said. "Making personalized medicines possible by doing the somewhat unsexy work of creating these automation systems."

Sartorius Aktiengesellschaft Q3 earnings call highlights.

Sartorius Aktiengesellschaft Q3 earnings call highlights. Sartorius Aktiengesellschaft (ETR:SRT) reported solid growth, improved profitability and stronger cash generation for the first nine months of 2026, supported by recurring consumables demand, a continuing recovery in equipment sales and broad regional momentum. Chief Executive Officer Michael Grosse said both major business areas contributed to growth, while the company continued to reduce leverage and strengthen its balance sheet. He said the underlying business momentum accelerated from the prior quarter when tariff-related effects were excluded. "Consumables remain strong," Grosse said, adding that the recovery in equipment was progressing as expected. The company confirmed its full-year group outlook and raised expectations for its Lab Products & Services business following a stronger-than-expected third quarter. Sales growth supported by consumables and equipment recovery. On an operational basis, which excludes the impact of tariff refunds and related customer compensation, Sartorius reported 8.1% sales growth in constant currencies for the first nine months. Including customer compensation associated with tariff surcharges, constant-currency growth was 6.9%. The company said it received an additional €5 million in U.S. tariff refunds during the third quarter, bringing refunds received in the first nine months to €31 million. Sartorius has submitted claims totaling about €40 million and expects the remaining amount by year-end, though it noted uncertainty over timing. Tariff-related customer compensation reduced group sales growth by approximately 120 basis points during the first nine months. In the third quarter alone, the impact was nearly 60 basis points. Lower tariff surcharge rates also became a growth headwind in the third quarter after benefiting results in the first half. Bioprocess Solutions recorded operational sales growth of 8.1% in constant currencies, or 6.8% including tariff-related customer compensation. Management said recurring business remained healthy, with consumables posting double-digit growth, while non-recurring equipment business grew year over year. Grosse said the equipment trend confirmed the recovery management had anticipated at the start of the year. René Fáber, head of Bioprocessing and CEO of Sartorius Stedim Biotech, said rising utilization rates were generating new equipment orders and demand remained high for high-throughput process-development systems. Lab Products & Services posted operational growth of 8.3% in constant currencies, or 7.5% including tariff compensation. Chief Financial Officer Florian Funck said the division's third-quarter performance exceeded expectations, helped by consumables, services and instruments, especially analytical solutions. However, Funck cautioned that part of the third-quarter Lab Products & Services result reflected demand pull-forward and timing effects after a prolonged period of subdued customer investment. MatTek, which performed in line with expectations, added roughly 2 percentage points to the division's growth. Profitability and cash flow improve. Underlying EBITDA rose 6.9% to €828 million, and the underlying EBITDA margin increased by 50 basis points to 30.2%. Sartorius said higher volumes and operating leverage more than offset an unfavorable product mix and continued spending on growth initiatives. Bioprocess Solutions generated €714 million in underlying EBITDA, with its margin improving by 80 basis points to 32.3%. Lab Products & Services delivered €114 million in underlying EBITDA, with a broadly stable year-over-year margin despite investment in future growth areas. Underlying net profit increased about 7% to €260 million. Underlying earnings per share rose to €3.76 per ordinary share and €3.77 per preference share. Reported net profit attributable to shareholders increased 51% to €188 million, aided by improved operating profit and lower extraordinary expenses than in the prior-year period. Operating cash flow increased around 10% to €562 million, while free cash flow rose 55% to €310 million. The company attributed the free-cash-flow improvement to higher operating cash flow and lower capital expenditure. The CapEx ratio was 9.6% for the nine-month period. Net debt declined to €3.68 billion, nearly €200 million below the level of 12 months earlier. The equity ratio rose to 42.8% from 39.8% at the end of 2025, while net debt to underlying EBITDA improved to 3.3 times. Asia-Pacific leads regional growth. All regions contributed to growth. EMEA sales increased 6.4% in constant currencies, with Bioprocess Solutions the primary contributor. Operational sales in the Americas increased 8.4%, though reported constant-currency growth including tariff-related customer compensation was 4.9%. Asia-Pacific was the strongest region, with sales up 11% in constant currencies. Both divisions produced double-digit growth in the region, supported by continued recovery in China. Management said activity in China was benefiting from research and development pipelines, drug approvals and additional molecules entering development. Grosse said local competitors remained mainly focused on less differentiated products for local production and biopharma markets. Outlook confirmed; lab expectations raised. Sartorius maintained its forecast for operational group sales growth around the midpoint of its 5% to 9% range and an underlying EBITDA margin slightly above 30%. For Bioprocess Solutions, the company still expects operational growth around the midpoint of its 6% to 10% range and a margin slightly above 32%. For Lab Products & Services, Sartorius now expects growth near the upper end of its 2% to 6% range and raised its margin forecast to slightly above 21%, from a prior expectation of slightly below 21%. The company lowered its full-year CapEx ratio expectation to about 12% from about 12.5%, while maintaining its expectation for net debt to underlying EBITDA to finish the year slightly above three times. Sartorius expects foreign exchange to reduce reported revenue growth by slightly more than one percentage point for the full year, although it expects a modest currency tailwind in the fourth quarter. Management cautioned that strong third-quarter growth should not be extrapolated into the fourth quarter because of Lab Products & Services pull-forward effects, a tougher comparison base, MatTek entering the organic comparison base and tariff surcharges becoming a headwind. Organizational and reporting changes planned for 2027. Sartorius also outlined a "One Sartorius" operating model intended to create a more customer-centric and integrated organization. Alexandra Gatzemeyer will become Chief Commercial Officer, leading groupwide account management, marketing, customer service and technical service. Fáber will become Chief Product Officer, overseeing research and development, product management, technical sales and manufacturing, while continuing as CEO of Sartorius Stedim Biotech. Beginning in 2027, Sartorius plans to replace its current Bioprocess Solutions and Lab Products & Services reporting structure with Bioprocessing Solutions and Research Solutions segments, plus a reconciliation line primarily reflecting intercompany eliminations. The company said the change would not affect group revenue or underlying EBITDA, and Sartorius Stedim Biotech will continue to report separately. The company also said it will begin applying the IFRS 18 reporting standard in 2027, though underlying EBITDA will remain its central profitability metric. Sartorius plans to release its full-year 2026 results and annual reports on Feb. 23. About Sartorius Aktiengesellschaft (ETR:SRT). Sartorius Aktiengesellschaft provides bioprocess solutions and lab products and services in the United States and internationally. The company offers multi-parallel, benchtop, single-use, stainless steel, cell culture, rocking motion, and microbial bioreactors, and software apps for bioreactors and cell culture shake flask; fermenters; cell culture media products; cellcelector flex, incubator flowbox, nanowell arrays, and capillaries and tips; fluid management products; microbiology products; and Ultrafiltration membrane filters, glass and quartz microfiber filters, clarification, syringeless and in-line filters, lab chromatography, and filters and blotting papers.

Sartorius reports 7.7% sales growth as bioprocess equipment stabilises

Sartorius reported solid first-half results, with constant-currency sales up 7.7% and underlying EBITDA rising 3.9% as margins improved to 30.3%. Management confirmed full-year guidance. Bioprocess Solutions led performance, growing 8.3% in constant currencies. Consumables drove growth, whilst equipment stabilised slightly. Chief executive Michael Grosse said demand for biologics remains robust, particularly in monoclonal antibody manufacturing. However, advanced-therapy orders from two customers were delayed and could shift revenue into 2027. Tariff refunds and accounting effects distorted reported results but did not change underlying business trends. The company booked €26 million in customer compensation related to tariffs. Operating cash flow and free cash flow both improved sharply in the first half.
