Why is Kadant (KAI) handing the keys to a 13-year insider?

Why is Kadant (KAI) handing the keys to a 13-year insider? Published September 25, 2026 at 3:40 am EDT Kadant Inc. (NYSE:KAI) has built a track record of compounding shareholder value, underpinned by multi-year revenue growth, robust operating cash flow generation, and high free cash flow conversion. Supported by a healthy balance sheet and a strong return on invested capital/ROIC, the core equity thesis centers on Kadant as a high-quality industrial compounder whose recurring, high-margin aftermarket parts revenue provides downside protection and steady cash flow across economic cycles. At a time when industrial sector peers like Graco bet big on strategic expansion while Wall Street recalibrates positions, Kadant differentiates itself through disciplined capital deployment. In a high-interest-rate environment, management's strategic rationale for utilizing leverage rests on acquiring cash-generative industrial processing businesses whose long-term ROIC comfortably exceeds higher borrowing costs. On September 10, Kadant initiated a structured leadership succession plan that directly bridges its acquisition-led growth strategy with operational execution. Under the announced transition, 13-year company veteran Michael C. Colwell will assume the roles of President and Chief Operating Officer on October 1, before succeeding long-time chief executive Jeffrey L. Powell as Chief Executive Officer on January 2, 2027. Powell, who has led Kadant for over 18 years, will continue as President through September 30, and as CEO through January 2, 2027, after which he will serve as Executive Chairman through January 1, 2028. This deliberate timeline ensures executive continuity while aligning leadership with the core operational drivers powering Kadant's long-term business model. An executive handoff structured for strategic continuity. The selection of Michael C. Colwell signals a commitment to preserving Kadant's decentralized operating model and capital allocation framework. Colwell has served as Senior Vice President of the Industrial Processing segment since December 2024, overseeing global operations in wood processing and fiber processing equipment. His tenure with the company began when Kadant acquired Kadant Carmanah Design in November 2013, an entity Colwell had led as President since 2010. Chairman Jonathan W. Painter emphasized that Colwell's extensive hands-on experience, proven operational leadership, and deep familiarity with Kadant's corporate culture make him uniquely qualified to drive the next phase of growth. The transition plan also marks a broader evolution within Kadant's board governance. Chairman Jonathan W. Painter will step down from the board effective January 2, 2027, paving the way for Jeffrey L. Powell to assume the Executive Chairman position. By establishing a multi-step, multi-year handoff, Kadant minimizes operational friction and maintains leadership stability across its global business segments, providing institutional investors with clarity during a critical macroeconomic backdrop. Acquisition gains offset softening organic demand. Kadant's Q2 2026 financial results demonstrate how its aggressive acquisition strategy continues to drive top-line performance, even as macroeconomic headwinds weigh on organic order momentum. Total revenue rose 23% year-over-year to a record $313 million, supported by an 8% increase in organic revenue alongside contributions from recent corporate acquisitions. Total bookings expanded 16% to $312 million; however, organic bookings edged down 1% year-over-year, reflecting customer caution and extended approval timelines for major capital projects across key global end-markets. Gross margin contracted by 210 basis points year-over-year to 43.8%, driven primarily by unfavorable product mix and the temporary dilutive impact of lower-margin acquired businesses. Despite these near-term margin pressures, high-margin aftermarket parts and service demand remained resilient, reinforcing Kadant's underlying cash generation profile. Management's ability to integrate newly acquired assets while preserving recurring aftermarket revenue flows will remain a central determinant of margin expansion as project spending normalizes. Valuation dynamics and short interest reflect institutional division. Institutional sentiment around Kadant reveals a divided market perspective. Hedge fund ownership held steady in recent quarters, with 23 elite funds maintaining long positions in the stock. However, short interest stands at a notable 13.33% of total float, indicating significant skepticism among market participants regarding valuation multiples and near-term organic growth trajectories. Trading at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 20.16x, as of September 24, Kadant presents a nuanced valuation profile. Bullish investors view the valuation multiple as reasonable for an industrial compounder possessing high recurring aftermarket sales, strong pricing power, and a historical track record of accretive acquisitions. Conversely, short sellers argue the premium multiple leaves limited margin for error given the 210-basis-point gross margin contraction, softening organic order momentum, and elevated interest expense stemming from balance sheet debt utilized to fund acquisition activity. The execution road ahead for long-term investors. Kadant's upcoming leadership transition represents a well-telegraphed shift designed to sustain long-term value creation. As Michael C. Colwell prepares to take the helm as CEO in January 2027, his primary mandate will focus on restoring organic order growth, integrating recent acquisitions to rebuild gross margins, and allocating free cash flow toward high-ROIC opportunities. For long-term investors, Kadant remains a compelling industrial compounder, provided incoming leadership successfully navigates broader capital spending headwinds while defending the company's high-margin aftermarket foundation.

New Graco ProReach: Telescopic Spray Extension with a reach of up to 3.7 metres.

New Graco ProReach: Telescopic Spray Extension with a reach of up to 3.7 metres. Published in: Sep 7, 2026 Working at height is one of the major challenges for professional painters. High ceilings, façades, eaves, stairwells and large walls often require the use of ladders, scaffolding or aerial work platforms, increasing the time needed to complete each job and forcing the operator to constantly reposition. Graco introduces a new solution specifically designed to simplify these applications: the new Graco ProReach Telescopic Spray Extension. ProReach allows the airless spray gun itself to be mounted at the end of a telescopic extension, enabling the operator to spray from the ground with an adjustable reach from 1.4 to 3.7 metres. This allows professional painters to cover elevated areas and hard-to-reach spaces while maintaining precise control over the spray application. However, ProReach is not simply a longer spray gun extension. Its design incorporates an adjustable-angle head, carbon-fibre construction, remote trigger actuation and a dedicated hose management system. The result is a tool designed to provide greater reach, higher productivity and reduced physical effort when painting at height. What is the new Graco ProReach? The Graco ProReach is a professional telescopic extension for airless spray guns designed to allow painters to spray at different heights while remaining on the ground. Its main difference compared with a conventional airless extension is the way it works. Instead of sending paint through a long extension tube with only the spray tip positioned at the end, ProReach allows the airless spray gun itself to be mounted at the top of the extension. The operator controls the gun from the lower section using a remote trigger, providing an immediate response similar to operating the spray gun directly by hand. This concept retains the advantages of spraying directly from the gun while providing considerably greater reach. From 1.4 to 3.7 metres: one extension for different heights. One of the main advantages of ProReach is its versatility. The extension can be adjusted from approximately 1.4 metres to 3.7 metres, allowing its length to be quickly adapted to the requirements of each work area. This means that the same accessory can be used for: - High ceilings. - Stairwells. - Façades. - Commercial spaces. - Homes with high ceilings. - Hard-to-reach areas. Instead of using different extensions for different heights, professionals can adjust ProReach as they progress through the project. Less time on ladders, more time spraying. A significant amount of the time spent working at height is not actually spent painting. Climbing a ladder, coming back down, moving it, repositioning it and repeating the process continuously can significantly reduce productivity. The concept behind ProReach is simple: allow the painter to remain on the ground for more of the job. This helps reduce the movement and repositioning associated with ladder use while allowing more continuous spraying. According to Graco, depending on the application, ProReach can help complete certain high-reach jobs up to twice as fast. Adjustable-Angle head for different surfaces. Reaching a surface is not enough. Achieving a high-quality finish also requires maintaining the correct spray angle. That is why one of the most useful features of ProReach is its adjustable-angle head. The operator can adjust the orientation of the spray gun to suit the surface being sprayed. This is particularly useful when spraying: - Ceilings. - Wall-to-ceiling junctions. - Façades. - Elevated areas. - Corners and hard-to-reach spaces. Thanks to this system, the extension can be adapted to both different heights and different working angles. Remote trigger: control the spray gun from the ground. How do you operate a spray gun positioned several metres above the operator? Graco has developed a responsive remote trigger integrated into the handle of ProReach. When the professional operates the lower trigger, the system immediately transfers the movement to the spray gun mounted at the top. This provides an operating feel designed to remain similar to using the spray gun directly by hand. In addition, the ergonomic four-finger trigger helps reduce hand strain during extended spraying applications. Compatible with most airless spray guns. Another major advantage of ProReach is that professionals do not necessarily need to change their existing airless equipment. The extension is designed to work with most airless spray guns and standard hoses from 1/8" to 3/8" (3.2-9.5 mm). It also features a tool-free quick-release system that makes installing and removing the spray gun quick and easy. This allows ProReach to be integrated into different working configurations and used only when the application requires it. Which jobs can really benefit from ProReach? ProReach is particularly useful for professionals who regularly work at height. - Homes with high ceilings: Makes it possible to spray elevated walls and ceilings while reducing the need to constantly reposition a ladder. - Stairwells: One of the most challenging areas in many renovation projects. The telescopic design and adjustable-angle head make it easier to reach surfaces at different heights and angles. - Façades and exterior surfaces: In certain applications, it allows upper areas to be reached directly from the ground while spraying continuously as the extension length is adjusted. - Eaves and hard-to-reach areas: The adjustable head allows the spray gun to be positioned towards surfaces where a conventional straight extension may be impractical. - Commercial premises and spaces: High ceilings and large walls can be sprayed more continuously, reducing interruptions caused by repositioning. ProReach is designed to make working at height faster, more comfortable and more productive. Less time spent repositioning access equipment means more time spraying. When this type of work is part of a painting contractor's daily routine, that difference can have a direct impact on the productivity of every project. At Jomar, as an Official Graco Distributor and Authorised Service Centre, Jomarmp can advise you on the compatibility of the new ProReach with your spray gun and airless equipment and help you configure the most suitable system for your work. Do you regularly work on high ceilings, façades or hard-to-reach areas? Discover the new Graco ProReach and take your airless spraying further than ever.
