Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse program is required.
  • Current Louisiana Licensed Practical Nurse licensure is required.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification is required within six months of employment.
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification is required within six months of employment.
  • Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification is required within six months of employment.
  • Successful completion of an arrhythmia course is required within six months of employment, followed by annual arrhythmia testing.
  • The role requires basic computer skills, time-management skills, strong written and verbal communication skills, and discretion when handling confidential information.
Responsibilities
  • Provide direct and indirect patient care services under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
  • Provide psychiatric nursing care and maintain comprehensive care quality.
  • Assess and reassess pain, use appropriate pain-management techniques, and educate patients and families about pain management.
  • Recognize potential behavior problems and set limits in a caring and consistent manner.
  • Maintain therapeutic relationships with patients through effective communication.
  • Obtain accurate assessments and participate in staffing and case conferences.
  • Provide age-appropriate patient care based on the applicable standard of care.
  • Administer medications correctly based on patient age and clinical condition, following the five medication rights to reduce medication errors.
  • Revise treatment plans according to patient responses and evaluate treatment-plan effectiveness daily.
  • Formulate and evaluate teaching plans based on patient learning needs, including family teaching when appropriate.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Maintain and upgrade psychiatric nursing knowledge through continuing learning activities.
  • Perform treatments and provide services within the scope of practical-nurse licensure.
  • Address patients’ and families’ psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious or spiritual needs with respect and dignity.
  • Involve patients and families in forming the plan of care.
  • Communicate with Social Services and the Discharge Planner about in-hospital and post-discharge needs.
  • Interpret patient-status data to identify age-specific needs and provide appropriate care across the lifespan.
  • Perform patient care in a manner that optimizes safety and reduces medical or healthcare errors.
  • Use medical and surgical asepsis during treatments and special procedures.
  • Coordinate and supervise patient care under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.
  • Consult other departments to provide an interdisciplinary approach to patient needs.
  • Communicate appropriately and clearly with team leaders, coworkers, and physicians.
  • Meet current documentation standards and policies.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies and physically distressful situations.
  • Manage and operate equipment safely and correctly.
  • Perform other duties within the Licensed Practical Nurse scope of practice.
