Requirements
  • Long Term Care underwriting experience is required.
  • Ten years of life underwriting experience.
  • Undergraduate studies in a medical-related discipline, marketing, insurance, risk management, economics, finance, or business management.
  • Obtainment of the AALU designation; participation in, or attainment of, professional or technical studies or designations such as Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and Fellow of Life Management Institute (FLMI).
  • Understanding of human anatomy and disease processes to assess mortality and morbidity risk and determine appropriate risk classifications.
  • A solid foundation in sophisticated financial underwriting; extensive knowledge of life underwriting principles and practices, including basic contract law; in-depth knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical and non-medical risks as they relate to life insurance; and knowledge of managing and interpreting underwriting results.
  • Knowledge of products and reinsurance, established relationships with facultative reinsurance partners, and the ability to reach terms on reinsurance decisions.
  • Ability to negotiate offers and explain offers that differ from the application to advisors or sales leaders.
  • Ability to make decisions on highly complex issues and work with minimal direction; proficiency in conflict resolution; adaptability and ability to handle ambiguity; advanced analytical and critical-thinking skills; ability to assess complex insurance risks, including policy language, alternative rating plans, methodologies, and reinsurance; ability to communicate difficult concepts and influence others; sound judgment and creative problem-solving, including negotiation; and ability to reach solutions when multiple options exist.

  • Demonstrated resilience and ability to support others through change.
Responsibilities
  • Receive, evaluate, and underwrite complex medical or non-medical life insurance applications up to the approved maximum handling limit; protect confidential documentation and information; and handle sophisticated assignments requiring specialized knowledge within broad limits and authority.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of underwriting manuals, materials, rules, regulations, procedures, medical factors, and practices affecting mortality and morbidity underwriting; maintain understanding of underwriting administrative systems; and provide service to internal and external customers and field partners.
  • Evaluate applications requiring additional evidence of insurability and determine and authorize underwriting requirements, including medical examinations, blood profiles, home-office specimens, attending physician reports, inspection reports, client direct interviews, and other essential information.
  • Develop understanding of accelerated underwriting and apply risk-based decisions to determine appropriate evidence requirements and risk class, including fluid-less underwriting and alternative medical information sources while maintaining appropriate risk tolerance.
  • Evaluate and quantify personal or business financial information and establish insurable interest in accordance with indemnification principles; handle complex financial underwriting applications and assist others through referrals and training.
  • Reach terms on, coordinate, and negotiate automatic and facultative reinsurance under Nationwide treaty terms and product and market practices.
  • Consult with other underwriters, accept referred cases when designated, suggest solutions, motivate team performance, facilitate communication, and supervise the handling of unusual or challenging cases.
  • Educate internal and external partners on underwriting processes, practices, and tools; train less experienced underwriting staff; and coordinate, participate in, and lead technical training development and delivery.
  • Work on assigned special projects with little to no direction and develop project plans, requirements, and timelines.
  • Meet with and present to field partners as needed, and gather input and feedback to understand partner needs and expectations.
  • Interpret electrocardiogram tracings submitted as evidence for life insurance applications and consult the Medical Director when physician input is required.
  • Determine eligibility for temporary insurance and authorize policy-refund disbursements when the TIA is ineligible; authorize reimbursement for medical records or other fees associated with requirements to confirm insurability.
  • Consult with the Chief Underwriter, Staff Underwriting, Senior Underwriting Consultants, and Medical Director as needed.
  • Support goals and objectives for territories, special agent programs, and contests.
  • Resolve challenges while improving service time, application-submission quality, underwriting quality, and wastage.
  • Exercise underwriting authority of up to $10,000,000 for life, up to $1,000,000 sign-off authority for morbidity underwriting, and sign-off authority for Intelligent Underwriting exceptions.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
  • Some non-standard hours and travel may be required.
