Crypto exchanges pivot beyond trading as volume falls 60%, with non-trading revenue now 61% at Gemini

Crypto exchanges are shifting away from trading fees as volume dries up. Spot volume on centralised exchanges hit a two-year low in July, down roughly 60% from its 2025 highs, while derivatives now make up over 70% of activity. Non-trading revenue is now the majority of income at several platforms: 61% at Gemini and roughly 60% at Kraken's parent Payward. At Coinbase it is 48%. Uphold is building infrastructure for firms that tokenise traditional assets, and adding tokenised assets and on-chain lending to its app. Chief executive officer Simon McLoughlin says "the age of utility is here." Binance took 38.7% of spot market share in Q2. Gemini and Coinbase have launched prediction markets, and Kraken plans its own.

Binance customer's Iran links drew law enforcement scrutiny, WSJ says.

Binance customer's Iran links drew law enforcement scrutiny, WSJ says. A Wall Street Journal report says transactions with an Iranian financial intermediary and repeated account access from Tehran drew scrutiny from U.S. and Swiss law-enforcement officials. Published 5 hours ago · Updated 3 hours ago Key Highlights * The Wall Street Journal reported that a Binance "high-value customer" managed a crypto firm run by Iranian financier Babak Zanjani. * Transactions with an Iranian money changer and repeated account access from Tehran reportedly drew attention from U.S. and Swiss law-enforcement officials. * Internal Binance records reportedly showed that senior approval was required to remove the customer because of his high-value status. Binance classified a customer linked to an Iranian cryptocurrency firm as a "high-value customer" while transactions involving an Iranian money changer and account access from Tehran raised concerns among law-enforcement officials. A Wall Street Journal report published on October 9, citing internal documents, said the customer managed a crypto firm operated by Babak Zanjani, whom U.S. and Israeli authorities have linked to Iranian financial networks. Transactions with Iranian money changer raised concerns. The WSJ reported that transactions with an Iranian money changer were among the first warning signs involving the customer. U.S. and Swiss law-enforcement officials subsequently contacted Binance about one of his accounts, which had reportedly been accessed repeatedly from Tehran. The customer was reportedly a manager at a company run by Zanjani, whom U.S. and Israeli authorities have linked to financial networks supporting Iran's government and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The available WSJ report excerpt does not identify the customer by name or disclose the total value of the transactions under scrutiny. High-Value customer status affected account removal. According to internal records cited by the WSJ, Binance designated the individual a "high-value customer," a classification that provided benefits including lower trading fees and personalized service. The report said investigators reviewing the accounts needed senior approval to remove the customer because of that status. The available information does not establish whether the designation alone delayed the decision or explained all the factors considered during the investigation. Binance told the WSJ that it blocked the customer's accounts in late 2025 and removed the final account in May 2026. The available report excerpt does not include a detailed response from the exchange addressing the specific approval procedures described by the newspaper. DOJ probe adds to Binance's Iran-related scrutiny. The latest WSJ report follows a September 22 report by The Crypto Times, which covered Bloomberg's reporting on a U.S. Department of Justice investigation into Binance's handling of Iran-linked trading. According to that report, prosecutors were examining whether Binance knowingly allowed transactions connected to Iran despite the exchange's earlier compliance settlement. The inquiry reportedly involved the Manhattan U.S. Attorney's Office and the DOJ's Criminal Division in Washington. A Binance spokesperson said at the time that the exchange had a zero-tolerance approach to sanctions violations and was cooperating with law enforcement. The reported investigation does not establish wrongdoing and could conclude without criminal charges. It remains separate from the customer account and internal approval procedures described in the latest WSJ report. Binance previously rejected WSJ allegations. Binance has disputed earlier WSJ reporting about Iran-linked transactions. In May, Binance co-CEO Richard Teng described a WSJ report as containing "fundamental inaccuracies." Teng said the transactions cited in that reporting occurred before the individuals involved were formally sanctioned. He also said Binance had investigated the issues and maintained a compliance framework designed to address sanctions risks. Binance said it did not permit transactions involving sanctioned individuals and reiterated its commitment to cooperating with law enforcement. Those statements concerned earlier reporting and do not resolve the specific questions raised by the October 9 article about the high-value customer and the internal approval process. Earlier U.S. Treasury actions involving Iran. A separate report published on May 8 covered the U.S. Treasury demands for stronger Binance compliance controls amid concerns about cryptocurrency activity linked to Iran. That report also described U.S. authorities' efforts to disrupt financial networks allegedly associated with Iran, including the freezing of $344 million in USDT linked to Iranian entities. The Treasury-related actions concerned broader sanctions enforcement and were separate from the customer account described by the WSJ. Binance's 2023 settlement remains relevant. In November 2023, Binance pleaded guilty to U.S. anti-money-laundering and sanctions-related violations and agreed to pay approximately $4.3 billion in penalties. The settlement included compliance obligations and independent monitoring. The latest WSJ report concerns separate account activity. The available reporting does not establish that this activity constituted a new sanctions violation or that Binance has been charged over the customer. What the report adds to the Binance investigation. The WSJ report raises questions about how Binance handled a customer whose transactions attracted law-enforcement attention. The separately reported DOJ investigation remains unresolved. The available reporting does not establish that Binance intentionally facilitated the alleged Iranian payment network. Gate bets all-in-one money app is crypto's biggest consumer trend this year and next.

Gate bets all-in-one money app is crypto's biggest consumer trend this year and next. Gate rebrands around Gate Money, which combines accounts, asset conversion, savings and card payments as the exchange broadens beyond its trading base. Oct 7, 2026, 11:13 a.m. EDT * Gate is joining a growing push by crypto exchanges to become all-in-one finance apps, as rivals including Coinbase, Binance, Bybit and Robinhood expand beyond digital-asset trading. Gate is the latest platform to bet that "everything" exchanges are the future model for crypto companies, with CEO and founder Lin Han predicting that all-one-money apps will become one of the biggest consumer trends in the coming year. The Cayman Islands-headquartered firm, which has $2 billion 24-hour trading volume and over 60 million users, is entering a widening race to turn trading accounts into broader consumer-finance apps. Coinbase expanded into investing, derivatives and banking, while Bybit is building a European super app. Robinhood's U.K. offering already combines crypto with stocks, ISAs, options and futures. Binance announced its bet on becoming a crypto super app in July. The opportunity is to make crypto one feature of an everyday money account, rather than an activity reserved for traders. Gate now allows users to hold and convert cash, cryptic currencies, stocks, gold and other assets in one account, then spend from those holdings through a card, Han told CoinDesk in an interview prior to unveiling its new app "Gate Money" in Singapore. "We don't want to stay with a small group of people who are professional at trading," Han said. "We want to provide this product to a wider range of customers." The Gate founder said he believes it's time for all crypto firms to bring in non-crypto users. That's where the biggest potential for growth is, he added. He added that said the company intends to allow users to convert between holdings at any time, including outside normal stock-market hours, but did not explain how such conversions would be priced or executed when underlying markets are closed. Gate's most ambitious claim is that users will be able to spend assets without first holding cash in their accounts. "You can buy a cup of coffee with Nvidia stock," Han said. "You cannot do that with any app in the world right now." He added that the biggest market for this service may be Asia, where people want access to U.S. stocks but can't access them because they have restricted access to international brokerage accounts. Han said Gate sees money apps such as Revolut, Cash App and Wise as more immediate competitors than traditional banks, though he also sees competition with other exchanges pursuing similar products. He said crypto firms now have the technology, licensing and banking relationships needed to offer services that once sat largely with banks and brokers. Ledger reassures users after third-party data breach.

Ledger reassures users after third-party data breach. By Danielle Reed October 6, 2026 Ledger has confirmed its hardware wallets and user funds remain secure after a data breach at its third-party e-commerce partner, Global-e. The company revealed the incident on January 5, stating that unauthorized access occurred in Global-e's cloud systems, which process orders for purchases through Ledger.com. The two companies began collaborating in October 2023. The breach did not affect Ledger's platforms, devices, or cryptocurrency holdings. According to the company, the exposed data included basic customer information, such as names and contact details, from those who bought Ledger products via Global-e. Other brands using Global-e's services also had order data compromised. Ledger stressed that Global-e did not store sensitive personal data, including birth dates, government identification, or financial information like credit card numbers. The company also confirmed that account passwords, wallet secrets, or 24-word recovery phrases were not exposed. Since Ledger wallets operate on a self-custody model, users maintain full control over their private keys and assets. Global-e discovered the breach after detecting unusual activity in its cloud infrastructure. The company contained the incident, engaged forensic specialists, and confirmed only a limited dataset was leaked. Ledger reiterated that its hardware and software were not directly compromised, reaffirming that its security approach, where users hold their own keys, remains effective. This incident comes after several major data breaches in the cryptocurrency sector, including attacks on Coinbase and Binance, where exposed consumer data has fueled phishing schemes. While Ledger's wallets were not directly impacted, the breach highlights the risks third-party vulnerabilities create within the broader industry. Ledger's official statement reinforced that self-custody provides the strongest protection against direct fund theft. The company warned users to stay alert for scams exploiting exposed personal information. Global-e has since restored its systems, and Ledger has reported no further service interruptions.

Binance integrates AI assistant to enhance cryptocurrency education for users.

Binance integrates AI assistant to enhance cryptocurrency education for users. Binance has launched a new AI-powered assistant designed to provide users with accessible and accurate information about cryptocurrencies, blockchain technology, and its platform services, aiming to demystify complex concepts for a broader audience. Published October 5, 2026 A new initiative by a leading cryptocurrency exchange is set to transform how users engage with digital assets. By integrating an artificial intelligence-driven assistant directly into its platform, the exchange seeks to empower its global user base with comprehensive knowledge, making the often-intricate world of blockchain and cryptocurrencies more approachable for both novices and experienced traders alike. Democratizing crypto education. Binance has introduced an AI-powered educational tool aimed at simplifying the learning curve associated with digital currencies. This assistant, aptly named 'Sensei,' is designed to answer a wide array of user queries, ranging from fundamental blockchain concepts to specific details about the exchange's offerings. The integration reflects a growing trend among platforms to leverage AI for personalized support and information dissemination, thereby fostering greater understanding and confidence among their communities. The core objective of Sensei is to bridge the knowledge gap that often intimidates new entrants to the crypto space. By offering instant, AI-generated explanations and insights, the platform intends to reduce the reliance on external resources and improve user retention. This direct access to information could significantly lower barriers to entry and encourage more informed participation in the cryptocurrency market. How the AI assistant operates. Sensei functions as an intelligent chatbot, capable of processing natural language queries and delivering relevant information in an easy-to-understand format. Users can ask questions about various cryptocurrencies, their underlying technologies, trading strategies, security best practices, and details regarding Binance's specific products and features. The assistant draws from a vast knowledge base, including the exchange's extensive academy content, support documentation, and market data. When a user submits a query, Sensei utilizes its AI algorithms to interpret the intent and retrieve the most pertinent information. This allows for a dynamic and interactive learning experience, moving beyond static FAQs or help articles. The goal is to provide concise, accurate, and contextually appropriate responses, guiding users through complex topics without overwhelming them. Benefits for users and the platform. For individual users, the primary benefit is immediate access to reliable information, which can aid in better decision-making and risk management within the volatile crypto market. Beginners can learn about key terms like "DeFi," "NFTs," or "staking" without needing to navigate multiple external sources. Experienced users might leverage Sensei to quickly recall platform-specific features or get updates on new services. From Binance's perspective, the AI assistant represents a strategic investment in user experience and platform scalability. By automating a significant portion of information delivery, the exchange can reduce the load on its customer support channels, allowing human agents to focus on more complex issues. This efficiency gain, coupled with an enhanced educational offering, is expected to improve overall user satisfaction and loyalty. Context against previous approaches. Historically, cryptocurrency exchanges have relied heavily on traditional educational resources such as blogs, academies, and FAQ sections. While valuable, these often require users to actively search for information, which can be time-consuming and sometimes overwhelming due to the sheer volume of content. Previous attempts at automated support often involved rudimentary chatbots that could only handle very specific, pre-programmed queries. Sensei marks a significant evolution by employing advanced AI capabilities to offer a more conversational and personalized learning journey. Unlike static content, the AI assistant can adapt to the user's specific question and provide tailored answers, offering a more dynamic and engaging educational experience. This shift represents a move towards proactive user empowerment rather than reactive problem-solving. Why it matters. The introduction of AI-powered educational tools like Sensei signifies a crucial step in the mainstream adoption of cryptocurrencies. By making complex financial and technological concepts more digestible and accessible, such innovations lower the barrier to entry for millions of potential users worldwide. This not only enhances user engagement and platform efficiency but also contributes to a more informed and secure cryptocurrency ecosystem, ultimately fostering greater trust and stability in the burgeoning digital asset space.
