Requirements
  • Graduation from a specialty training program is required.
  • At least three years of related work experience is required.
  • Maintain Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Maintain Basic Life Support certification.
  • Hold Certified Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic certification.
  • Hold Certified Flight Paramedic certification, or acquire the FP-C credential within one year of hire if not previously certified.
  • Maintain Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification.
  • Maintain S.T.A.B.L.E. certification.
  • Maintain Pennsylvania Department of Health medical command status.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds and remain within the 250-pound weight limit in flight gear.
  • Demonstrated communication, preceptor, and teamwork skills.
Responsibilities
  • Provide critical care transport paramedic-level care to Life Flight patients until care is relinquished to an accepting medical facility, in conjunction with the Flight Nurse.
  • Assist healthcare providers in Geisinger Emergency Departments with patient care as needed.
  • Maintain thorough patient care documentation in the electronic medical record.
  • Practice within the paramedic scope of practice defined by a medical command physician, written regional protocols, and Pennsylvania Department of Health EMS Act 37.
  • Maintain competency in paramedic knowledge and psychomotor skills through ongoing laboratory and clinical experiences.
  • Communicate educational needs to the Chief Flight Nurse, Regional Supervisors, Medical Director CEPs, and Life Flight Educator.
  • Function as a critical care flight and critical care transport paramedic with an expanded scope of practice approved by the Life Flight Medical Director and Pennsylvania Department of Health.
  • Maintain competency in the use and routine maintenance of Life Flight equipment and supplies.
  • Ensure cleanliness, organization, and proper equipping of the medical interior of Life Flight helicopters.
  • Maintain adequate inventories of supplies and equipment at each Life Flight base site.
  • Maintain orderly and clean rooftop helipads at all hangar locations.
  • Function as a flight crew member and assist the pilot as needed.
  • Comply with safety standards to protect self, medical crew members, patients, and equipment during all phases of flight.
  • Participate in preflight briefings and post-flight debriefings.
  • Act as a preceptor and participate in the orientation of new employees and students as assigned.
  • Assist in conducting safety briefings as needed.
  • Maintain awareness of current paramedic issues through professional activities.
  • Participate in Life Flight educational requirements needed to maintain active status and as required by the Life Flight program.
  • Identify processes or systems that could potentially lead to errors and adverse events.
  • Participate in required patient safety education programs and activities designed to improve departmental and organizational patient safety.
