Requirements
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to one year of maintenance and repair work experience.
  • Two years of responsible building maintenance experience, including preventive maintenance and repairs to buildings and/or facilities.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and compute rates, ratios, percentages, areas, circumferences, and volumes.
  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out written, oral, or diagram-based instructions and solve problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Must have a valid Texas Class C Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Knowledge of plumbing and electrical repair.
  • Ability to operate and maintain a variety of power and manual tools and equipment.
  • Ability to work under general supervision.
  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other county employees and officials.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects and occasionally lift or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of standing, walking, reaching, climbing or balancing, and stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
  • Ability to work in high or precarious places and in outside weather conditions, with exposure to wet or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme temperatures, vibration, and moderate to loud noise.
Responsibilities
  • Perform preventive maintenance routines on equipment.
  • Repair broken jail security doors.
  • Repair light fixtures and replace ballasts.
  • Clean and replace air-conditioner filters.
  • Repair heating and air-conditioning systems.
  • Repair kitchen appliances.
  • Perform plumbing repairs, including unsticking shower buttons and repairing flush valves, shower valves, leaky water faucets, and sprinkler systems.
  • Repair water or sewer lines as needed.
  • Clean wastewater lines and repair chilled-water pumps and valves.
  • Install conduit, electrical wiring, plugs, and light fixtures.
  • Perform welding as needed.
  • Remain on duty before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies as directed by the supervisor.
Desired Qualifications
  • A high school diploma or General Educational Development certificate is preferred but not required.
