What believers are saying

  • Enterprise relationships run deep: GitHub reports developers from 90% of Fortune 100 companies using its platform.
  • Remote work supports location flexibility: GitHub describes a remote-first culture with home-office resources.
  • New parents receive substantial leave: GitHub lists five months of paid family leave, with benefits varying by country.

What critics are saying

  • Copilot leaves verification to users: GitHub requires reviewing generated code for accuracy and security.
  • Demand outruns infrastructure: GitHub's August 2026 capacity failure disrupted multiple services for seven hours and 47 minutes.
  • On-call engineers face extended response work: GitHub's August 2026 Copilot status incident lasted over ten hours.

What makes GitHub unique

  • Developer distribution is unusually broad: GitHub reports more than 225 million developers on its platform.
  • Maintainers get funding beside their code: GitHub Sponsors routes financial support directly through project pages.
  • GitHub preserves software beyond online hosting: its Arctic vault uses film designed to last 1,000 years.

17a-4 DataParser Hub lets clients feed proprietary content into Microsoft Purview and Copilot

17a-4 LLC has added an API to its DataParser Hub that lets clients send proprietary content into Microsoft Purview and Copilot. The New York company announced the feature on October 21, 2026. DataParser already captures more than 30 types of messaging and collaboration data, including Slack, Webex, Symphony, and Zoom. Some clients also hold custom content, such as JSON exports from agentic AI, that no standard connector covers. The new API offers a formatted schema for ingestion, so clients need not build their own M365 integrations. Data sent to Hub can appear in Outlook, be available to Purview's Communications Compliance and eDiscovery, and feed into Copilot. Clients can also store it in Azure Blob. Output can tie into a client's Active Directory, and metadata can flag data type or classification.

KillSwitch, an esoteric programming language built to confuse LLMs, tops out at 66.8% in AI tests

Software engineer Dominik Picheta has built KillSwitch, an open-source programming language designed to confuse large language models (LLMs). Picheta is a senior software engineer at Cloudflare and a core developer of the Nim language. The language uses adverbs as identifiers, and calling one requires an anagram of it. Most text in a program is ignored by the interpreter, while phrases such as "ignore previous instructions" call functions. The spec document also contains deliberate lies to mislead models that scrape it. Picheta tested several major models. The best scored 66.8% on KillSwitch coding tasks, while most struggled to pass 50%. He does not believe even that score shows the models understand the code. KillSwitch is available on GitHub.

Open source RemoveMacAI tool strips Apple Intelligence from macOS, frees up 12GB storage

A new open-source tool called RemoveMacAI allows users to completely remove Apple Intelligence from macOS and reclaim up to 12GB of storage space. Created by Om Lahorey, the tool emerged after Apple made it nearly impossible to fully disable AI features in macOS 27, with settings scattered across multiple locations. RemoveMacAI eliminates Siri AI, ChatGPT extensions, Genmoji, writing suggestions, notification summaries, and automatic photo clean-up. It works by installing a configuration profile using Apple's own restriction keys and removing models through Apple's asset service. The tool has gained over 1,500 stars on GitHub. Users can install it via Homebrew or a curl command, disable features selectively or completely, and revert changes if needed. Apple System Integrity Protection remains enabled, and dictation continues functioning. However, future macOS updates might break the tool's functionality.

Jev-powered Slop Mop Chrome extension filters AI and human garbage from LinkedIn feeds

A new Chrome extension called Slop Mop aims to filter low-quality content from LinkedIn feeds, whether written by humans or AI. Released Tuesday by business consultant Tom Frazier, the open-source tool is free and requires no signup. The extension uses Jev, a probabilistic decision-making AI model from TypeSafe released last week. It evaluates posts based on nine indicators derived from research by SEO firm Graphite Growth, including excessive hype words, engagement bait, and flowery language. Slop Mop flags or hides posts meeting its threshold without removing them from feeds. The tool can analyse up to 250 posts daily per installation. Frazier developed it primarily to test Jev's capabilities, covering usage costs himself at approximately $0.005 per user daily. The extension is available on GitHub and the Chrome Web Store.

Cursor launches Origin code hosting platform as Github suffers outages

Cursor, now part of SpaceXAI, has launched Origin, a new code hosting platform designed to rival GitHub. The platform enables developers to collaborate on codebases, manage pull requests, and store repositories. Origin works alongside GitHub, allowing users to sync repositories between both platforms rather than forcing a complete switch. The launch comes amid mounting frustration over GitHub's reliability issues. The platform has experienced 257 outages over the past year, including a six-hour worldwide outage on the same day Origin launched. Despite these challenges, GitHub remains dominant with 180 million developers using the Microsoft-owned platform as of October. Cursor says "agent native" features and a broader app ecosystem will be added to Origin soon, though details remain limited.
