Asian stocks fall as Alphabet, Samsung disappoint; KOSPI drops 3%

Asian stocks fell on Thursday, giving up early gains as weak results from Alphabet and a sell-off in Samsung Electronics hit technology shares. Investors now await earnings from Amazon and Intel for clues on AI investment. Alphabet shares slumped about 10% in after-hours US trading after results missed expectations and the company signalled heavy AI infrastructure spending. Nasdaq 100 futures slid 1.5%. South Korea's KOSPI fell about 3%. Samsung dropped nearly 6% despite record third-quarter earnings, as its chip profit missed forecasts and it gave no details on extra shareholder returns. China's Shanghai Composite fell 1.2%, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng TECH index slid 2%. Japan's Nikkei 225 edged up 0.2%. The Bank of Japan is expected to hold its policy rate at 1.25% on Friday.

Samsung's $80.5B profit and 783% surge fail to lift Asian markets as tech results diverge

Alphabet dropped 10% in after-hours trade on lower-than-expected profit and slower advertising growth. Microsoft beat forecasts on revenue and profit, driven by its Azure cloud division, and Oracle issued a healthy revenue forecast. SK hynix rose more than 1%. Seoul's Kospi fell 2.9%, while Tokyo's Nikkei rose 0.3%. Oil stayed above $100 a barrel.
