Requirements
  • Graduate of a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing for the nurse practitioner track.
  • National certification by one of the recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Certification Centers for the nurse practitioner track.
  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia for the nurse practitioner track.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Sciences, Master’s Degree in Medical Sciences, or Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies for the physician assistant track.
  • Certification by the National Commission for the Certification of Physician Assistants for the physician assistant track.
  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine for the physician assistant track.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department’s discretion.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification may be required at the department’s discretion.
  • Dermatology experience is required.
  • The employee must be able to lift, move, stoop, reach, position patients, stand, walk, and carry patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
  • The role requires proficiency with computers.
  • The role requires strong communication skills.
Responsibilities
  • Complete consults and emergent evaluations.
  • Order additional tests or consults, in collaboration with Dermatology faculty or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
  • Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
  • Consult and communicate with clinical and hospital staff regarding abnormal patient evaluation findings.
  • Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
  • Facilitate patient discharge or disposition by coordinating appropriate services and tests for follow-up appointments or necessary care arrangements.
  • Provide care for patients across the age continuum within the scope of the employee’s education and certification.
  • Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
  • Assist in collecting outcome measures when applicable.
  • Use critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in clinical decision-making to identify, evaluate, and manage patients’ individual Dermatology needs.
  • Use equipment safely.
  • Base decisions and actions on relevant scientific principles, established standards of care, or research findings.
  • Provide education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community using appropriate teaching and learning strategies.
  • Promote an environment that facilitates learning by responding to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
  • Update professional knowledge throughout the year.
  • Complete all identified clinical competencies.
  • Serve as a resource for staff caring for Dermatology patients.
  • Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel within the area of expertise.
  • Participate in community programs and distribute literature when appropriate within the area of expertise.
  • Document the plan of care, interventions, evaluations, and disposition plans clearly and concisely for every patient visit according to approved hospital and University Health Associates policies and documentation compliance standards.
  • Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient outcome-based improvements in Dermatology.
  • Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in the Dermatology practice that positively affect patient outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to facilitate problem-solving and provide professional support.
  • Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education, and serve as a professional role model.
  • Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
  • Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
  • Review and interpret Dermatology data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, access-to-care reports, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes as necessary.
  • Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
  • Assist Dermatology faculty, administrators, and directors in collecting outcome measures.
Desired Qualifications
  • Acute Care Nurse Practitioners and Family Nurse Practitioners are considered.
  • A master’s-level degree as a Physician Assistant is preferred.
  • Dermatology experience is also identified as preferred for the physician assistant track.
