EMCOR Group, inc.: wiring the AI economy.

EMCOR Group, inc.: wiring the AI economy. Behind every AI data center sit thousands of tons of switchgear, chillers, cable trays and process piping, and someone has to install them. eader in mechanical and electrical construction and building services: it installs and maintains the power, cooling, fire protection and control systems that data centers, chip plants, hospitals and water utilities depend on. EMCOR has turned that unglamorous job into one of the most profitable growth stories in U.S. construction. Published on 10/08/2026 at 03:42 am EDT MarketScreener.com EMCOR operates in U.S. non-residential mechanical, electrical and plumbing contracting and in facility services, highly fragmented markets with few barriers to entry. Total U.S. construction spending reached a $2.2 trillion annual rate in August 2026, up 0.9% in the month, but growth is concentrated: Census data put data center construction at an $84.95 billion pace, up 73% YoY and more than nine times its January 2021 level. Data center starts total $98.5 billion so far in 2026, 24% of all non-residential building starts, with the average project more than doubling to $1.18 billion. Rising electrical and mechanical content per building, supply-chain reshoring, water infrastructure and energy-efficiency retrofits are the other growth drivers. Elsewhere, the market is soft: private non-residential spending fell 1.0% YoY to $773.0 billion in August, office construction dropped 9.7% and manufacturing 19.8%. Labor is the main bottleneck, as the industry must hire an estimated 349,000 workers in 2026 and 456,000 in 2027, with electricians especially scarce. Copper and steel prices, tariffs, interest rates, grid power availability and federal funding under the CHIPS Act and the IRA complete the list of industry risks. After selling its U.K. arm on December 1, 2025, EMCOR reports four U.S. segments. In 2025, Mechanical Construction (HVAC, process piping, fire protection) generated $7.05 billion, or 42% of revenue; Electrical Construction (power distribution, low-voltage and fiber systems) $5.07 billion (30%); Building Services (HVAC service, retrofits, controls, facility management) $3.12 billion (18%); and Industrial Services (refinery turnarounds, heat exchangers) $1.27 billion (7%). EMCOR's strengths include 100 subsidiaries from roughly 450 U.S. locations as well as $924 million in cash and just $6.1 million of debt as of June 2026, supporting bonding capacity for large projects. It also benefits from advanced prefabrication and virtual design capabilities and a safety incident rate below 1.0 versus 2.4 for the industry. Weaknesses include a 2.0% Industrial Services margin, lost facility contracts, weaker Electrical productivity that pushed margins from 13.4% to 12.1%, and a 62% unionized workforce. EMCOR competes with Comfort Systems USA, APi Group, Quanta Services, MasTec, MYR Group and IES Holdings in construction, and Carrier, Trane, CBRE, JLL and ABM in services. Comfort Systems is its closest peer, while Quanta and MasTec focus more on utility infrastructure. EMCOR differentiates itself by combining mechanical and electrical capabilities at national scale with strong local brands and a recurring service business. The portfolio is expanding quickly. EMCOR acquired Miller Electric for $876.8 million in 2025, followed by nine smaller deals. Five more electrical acquisitions in 2026 add roughly $625 million of revenue and $105 million of EBITDA for $750 million. RPOs reached a record $17.14 billion, up 43.9%, with Network and Communications representing 45% and Healthcare, Institutional and Water also growing. Revenue grew from $9.90 billion in 2021 to $16.99 billion in 2025, a 14.4% annual rate, including 16.6% growth in 2025 as acquisitions contributed $1.27 billion and data centers drove organic demand. First-half 2026 revenue rose another 19.7%, or 18.3% organically, to $9.78 billion, with full-year guidance of $20.00-20.50 billion versus $20.32 billion consensus. Profitability has expanded even faster: EBITDA increased from $994.7 million in 2023 at a 7.9% margin to $1.90 billion in 2025 at 11.2%, then reached $1.06 billion in the first half of 2026, up 28.6%. Net income rose from $633 million in 2023 to $1.27 billion in 2025 and $709.2 million in the first half of 2026, up 30.6%. ROA reached 15.0% and ROE 38.5% in 2025, while $112.8 million of CapEx - just 0.7% of revenue - left $1.19 billion of FCF Diluted EPS climbed from $7.06 in 2021 to $28.19 in 2025, supported by earnings growth and $586.3 million of share buybacks that reduced diluted shares to 44.6 million. EMCOR now guides to $32.00-33.25 for 2026, around the $32.85 consensus, with roughly $36.75 expected in 2027. The annualized dividend has increased to $1.60 after a 60% raise, but the payout ratio remains only about 5%. The stock trades at 25.7x trailing earnings, up from 16.0x at the end of 2023, and 22.4x 2027 earnings. EV/sales has similarly expanded from 0.80x in 2023 to 1.94x today, or 1.61x on 2027 estimates. During Q2 2026, EMCOR's growth accelerated, with revenue up 19.8% to a record $5.15 billion and organic growth of 19.6%. Operating income rose 31.8% to $547.3 million, lifting the operating margin to 10.6% from 9.6%, while SG&A fell to 9.2% of revenue from 9.7%. Net income increased 33.6% to $403.7 million and diluted EPS rose 34.8% to $9.06. Electrical revenue grew 24.0% with margins expanding to 13.9%, while Mechanical revenue grew 31.1%, though margins eased to 12.5%. RPOs reached a record $17.14 billion, up 43.9%, supporting an increase in full-year guidance to $20.00-20.50 billion of revenue, a 9.5-9.8% operating margin and EPS of $32.00-33.25. Regarding risks, Network and Communications represents 45% of EMCOR's RPOs, leaving the company increasingly exposed to data center spending. A slowdown in AI and cloud investment or limited grid power could weaken demand, while a nearly 26x earnings multiple leaves little room for disappointment. Fixed-price contracts also expose margins to cost overruns, tariffs and higher copper and steel prices, while projects in backlog can be delayed or cancelled. The decline in Electrical margins from 13.4% to 12.1% in 2025 shows the execution risk when expansion outpaces local labor and productivity. Labor is another constraint: skilled trades remain scarce, 62% of employees are unionized and EMCOR participates in roughly 200 multiemployer pension plans, creating potential withdrawal liabilities. Acquisitions add another layer of risk, with goodwill and intangibles reaching $2.54 billion, or 25% of assets. Underperforming deals could lead to impairments, while rapid growth has already pressured working capital and contributed to weaker operating cash flow in 2025 and the first half of 2026. EMCOR is well positioned to benefit from continued investment in data centers and other complex infrastructure. Strong revenue and earnings growth, record backlog, improving margins and a nearly debt-free balance sheet give the company solid momentum. The main risks are its growing exposure to data centers, labor constraints, project execution and a valuation that already reflects high expectations. EMCOR can continue to perform well if demand and margins hold, but the current share price leaves less room for execution misses. (C) MarketScreener.com - 2026
