  • Demonstrated impact building and testing propulsion, engine, or fluid systems for aerospace applications.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), and assembly procedures.
  • Proficiency in precision assembly, torqueing, sealing, and pressure system fabrication.
  • Proficiency with precision measurement tools, including micrometers, calipers, and depth gauges, and familiarity with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) fundamentals.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, redline, and iterate directly with engineering teams.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds, work in confined spaces, and support test operations as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble, integrate, and test prototype propulsion and fluid systems using early engineering drawings and schematics.
  • Perform mechanical, pneumatic, and electromechanical builds according to design intent.
  • Provide engineering feedback on design improvements, build sequence, and hardware performance.
  • Conduct functional testing, pressure testing, and leak verification of propulsion subassemblies.
  • Support data collection, test setup, and post-test inspection during engine and subsystem development.
  • Fabricate or modify components and tooling to support rapid iteration and hands-on problem solving.
  • Maintain safety, cleanliness, and quality standards in lab and shop environments.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in liquid propulsion research and development, including early-stage prototype builds and engine development.
  • Hands-on experience building, assembling, and testing complex actuator or mechanical assemblies.
  • Proficiency in TIG welding, tube bending, and precision fitting of fluid systems.
  • Experience setting up, operating, and maintaining ground support equipment (GSE).
  • Familiarity with pressure testing, leak checks, and data acquisition systems.
  • Ability to design or modify custom tooling and fixtures for test and assembly.
  • Prior work in startup or rapid-iteration space programs where technicians directly influence design and test outcomes.

About the Company

Hermeus

Develops hypersonic defense aircraft and engines

Hermeus designs and builds high-Mach and hypersonic aircraft for defense, using uncrewed test platforms and a reusable propulsion system. Its core approach centers on the Quarterhorse testbed and the Chimera engine, a turbine-based combined cycle that starts in a turbojet mode for runway takeoff and transitions to a ramjet for speeds above Mach 5. The company differentiates itself with rapid, hardware-focused prototyping drawn from a spaceflight background and a clear path to production through government contracts with the DoD, DIU, and ABMS programs. Its near-term goal is to mature Quarterhorse and Darkhorse into production-capable systems for defense missions, while its long-term vision includes Halcyon, a 20-seat commercial airliner flying transatlantic routes in about 90 minutes.
