Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist training program.
  • Certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist is preferred.
  • Two years of experience or ambulatory surgery center experience is preferred.
  • Successfully complete Basic Life Support certification within six months of hire.
  • Demonstrate appropriate sterile and aseptic technique.
  • Perform scrub technologist functions according to Association of periOperative Registered Nurses recommended practices and surgery center policies and procedures.
  • Manage the operative field while maintaining the sterile field.
  • Know how to disinfect, clean, and prepare instruments, equipment, and supplies for sterilization.
  • Operate processing equipment, including an ultrasonic cleaner, washer-disinfector, Steris equipment, and autoclave, using appropriate settings.
  • Have prior knowledge of surgical instrumentation and perioperative equipment.
  • Work effectively in stressful situations and within a team environment.
  • Demonstrate interpersonal communication skills for effective interaction with health care professionals and personnel.
  • Perform the job with minimal supervision.
  • Flex work hours as needed or requested by management.
  • Maintain required registration and certification.
  • Meet the visual, hearing, physical, standing, walking, lifting, and manual-dexterity demands of the role.
  • Follow safety procedures when working with hazardous materials, electrical equipment, blood-borne pathogens, and patient transfers.
Responsibilities
  • Set up operative fields by arranging instrumentation, equipment, and supplies on the Mayo stand and back tables according to surgery center policies and the surgeon preference card.
  • Work as a surgical assistant by selecting equipment, positioning the patient, preparing the surgical site using sterile technique, holding retractors, suctioning, cauterizing, placing dressings, and assisting with skin closure under physician direction.
  • Prepare the next day's scheduled procedures by pulling cases, using surgeon preference cards, verifying supplies and equipment, labeling cases, and accurately preparing needs lists.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and other surgical team members.
  • Handle specimens according to surgery center policies and procedures.
  • Properly handle and store delicate instrumentation used for assigned cases.
  • Prepare clean and contaminated instruments and supplies for transport, and transport them to decontamination for processing and sterilization.
  • Disinfect, clean, and prepare instruments, equipment, and supplies for sterilization.
  • Maintain the surgery center suite through case preparation, room turnover, and terminal cleaning.
  • Control inventory and stock supplies.
  • Maintain confidentiality of surgery center and patient information.
  • Attend applicable training and development workshops and professional training seminars.
  • Maintain professional knowledge through printed materials and other development sources, and share relevant information with staff.
  • Assist with orienting new personnel.
  • Participate in quality-improvement activities, including identifying cost-reduction and efficiency opportunities.
  • Support regulatory certification and accreditation of the surgery center.
  • Maintain dress and appearance according to the surgery center dress code.
  • Appropriately communicate to diffuse and resolve conflicts.
  • Assist in maintaining a positive, professional, considerate, helpful, and courteous environment.
  • Respect patient, family, and employee rights and expectations.
Desired Qualifications
  • Certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist.
  • Two years of experience or ambulatory surgery center experience.
  • Education provided through the United States Army or Navy.
