Requirements
  • High school graduation, some additional training in a related field, and a minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities
  • Process new acquisitions, including documentation, acquisitions-related pest management, object accessioning, condition reporting, numbering, and entering related data into the collections management system.
  • Enter and update accessioning and cataloguing data in the collections management system according to established procedures.
  • Conduct ongoing collection inventories for accountability, stewardship, and auditing purposes.
  • Identify and report data inconsistencies or gaps to senior staff for review and resolution.
  • Assist with facilitating collection and object-record access requests from museum curators, university faculty, researchers, originating community groups, and the public.
  • Support collection access by retrieving and returning objects from storage and display and facilitating community visits.
  • Track, move, install, and deinstall objects for acquisitions, access and loan requests, storage issues, exhibitions, and special projects.
  • Assess and prepare museum objects for digitization by carrying out preventive conservation measures under guidance and providing specialized handling as needed.
  • Assist with procuring departmental supplies, including researching new and difficult-to-source museum and archival supplies.
  • Perform routine cleaning of collections storage and public-gallery exhibit areas, care for objects on display, and maintain cases using established procedures.
  • Clean collection objects using appropriate techniques based on their nature, composition, and condition, while considering preventive conservation principles.
  • Assist with answering or forwarding public queries about the museum's collections.
  • Assist with loan processing, including photography, condition reporting, creating secure travel housings, and packing.
  • Assist with training student interns and volunteers, distribute assignments to them, and support Museum Studies lab courses.
  • Support other collections- and conservation-related tasks, special projects affecting the collections, and other support work as required.
Desired Qualifications
  • A university or college degree in a relevant discipline, practical training in collections management processes, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Awareness and sensitivity to issues concerning collections originating from First Nations and other communities.
  • Experience working with the public and the university community.
  • Knowledge of professional collections management processes and preventive conservation standards.
  • Competency in designing and making housing systems for museum collections.
  • Knowledge of the Museum of Anthropology's collections and processes.
  • Experience entering data in a collections management system.
  • Basic knowledge of professional ethics and material culture.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties, including lifting, standing, and working at heights.
  • Ability to accurately create and maintain records; manage multiple tasks and priorities; input and extract data and compile reports; analyze problems, identify key information and issues, and resolve them; coordinate tasks; demonstrate relevant techniques and train students and others; facilitate groups; communicate verbally and in writing; respond to contentious or politically sensitive issues with discretion; and exercise tact and discretion.
