Abta chief keen to attract more agents to annual Convention.

Abta chief keen to attract more agents to annual Convention. Abta chief executive Mark Tanzer has acknowledged he would like to see more frontline travel agents attending the association's annual Travel Convention, while stressing that the event remains relevant to the trade. Speaking to Travel Weekly at this year's convention in Madeira, Tanzer recognised the challenges agents faced in taking time away from their businesses and said the growing number of supplier-funded conferences was making it harder to attract them to Abta's flagship event. Of the approximately 300 delegates attending this year's Convention, 13 are frontline travel agents, including 11 hosted by easyJet holidays. Other agency representatives including the heads of Barrhead Travel, InteleTravel, World Travel Holdings and On the Beach are also in attendance. Tanzer suggested agents were increasingly opting for supplier-funded events, where their attendance and travel costs were covered. He said the Abta convention had traditionally attracted significant numbers of hosted agents. "Tour operators would bring their agents here, and loads of agents came funded by the tour operators," he said. However, he noted that many suppliers now hosted their own events, giving agents more opportunities to network and engage with industry partners. Tanzer also pointed to changes in the agency sector following the pandemic, suggesting smaller businesses had fewer staff and found it more difficult to release employees for overseas conferences. "When Covid came, a lot of frontline agents, sort of owner-operators, downsized," he said. "Therefore, time out of the office for them is more challenging than it used to be because they've got fewer staff." He stressed that Abta had not deliberately shifted the convention away from its traditional travel agent audience. "It'd be nice to have more agents, but it's not a conscious move we've made to shift it away from them," he said. Tanzer maintained that agents who attended continued to respond positively to the event's content, describing it as relevant and stimulating. He said Abta encouraged tour operators to bring hosted agents to the convention but acknowledged that agents faced competing demands on their time. Abta head of media and communications Emma Brennan also highlighted the association's wider programme of engagement with travel agents, including monthly video meetings and regional gatherings. Tanzer said these initiatives offered additional opportunities for agents to access advice, training and networking without attending the annual overseas event. 'You can get a lot out of it' Shaun Taylor, owner of Inspire Travel by Shaun Shaun Taylor, owner of Inspire Travel by Shaun, which is backed by the Inspire Group, said more frontline agents could benefit from attending the convention, highlighting the opportunities to learn about the wider industry and make contacts. "I think you learn a lot, meet lots of new people and get to learn a bit more about the industry as a whole," he said, speaking to Travel Weekly at the 'Meet the Media' event, organised by Intrepid Travel. Asked whether the benefits justified the expense of attending, Taylor said: "I think it can be worth the price and you can get a lot out of it. You can make lots of connections, but also learn a lot as well." Taylor, who also attended the 2022 convention in Marrakech, said he believed there had been "a few more" agents at that event. On the Beach chief executive Shaun Morton also praised the Convention's content, telling Travel Weekly editor-in-chief Lucy Huxley he had been impressed by the sessions on the opening day.

Hearst UK launches brand licensing partnership with Intrepid Travel.

Hearst UK launches brand licensing partnership with Intrepid Travel. By Samantha Loveday October 5, 2026 Hearst UK has confirmed a new licensing partnership with adventure tour operator Intrepid Travel, bringing together four of its leading brands - Cosmopolitan, Men's Health, Women's Health and Runner's World - to create a programme of branded adventure holidays. The partnership combines the authority and expertise of Hearst's editorial brands with Intrepid Travel's experience in creating immersive, responsible and locally-led travel experiences. Each trip has been developed to reflect the distinctive identity of each respective brand, offering readers and members the opportunity to explore new destinations through the lens of their shared interests and passions. Runner's World will be the first brand to launch, with bookings for 'Runner's World Holidays: Croatia's Island Trails' now live, ahead of the first trip in May 2027. The holiday will take guests from Ljubljana to the Adriatic coast, with a programme of trail running, island exploration and time to experience Croatia's natural landscapes. The wider programme will launch shortly afterwards in spring 2027. Bookings for Men's Health holidays will open later this month with excursions combining adventure, activity and exploration, while those seeking an active retreat centred on hiking, movement, recovery and wellness will have the option to do so with Women's Health. In November, Cosmopolitan will open bookings for 2027 holidays focusing on female-led experiences, cultural discovery and solo travel. Each holiday will include an editorial host from the respective Hearst UK brand, alongside a local Intrepid leader and carefully selected activities, accommodation and experiences. The launches will be supported through integrated marketing campaigns across Hearst UK's digital, social, membership and print platforms, with members offered early access to book before each trip is made available to the wider public. "Our members are at the heart of our brands, and we're always looking for meaningful ways to bring people together around the passions they share," commented Natasha Banjo, general manager, women's lifestyle and health and wellness at Hearst UK. "Intrepid is a wonderful partner in helping us do just that. Their commitment to immersive, responsible and locally led travel makes them a natural fit for our brands and audiences. Together, we can bring Cosmopolitan, Men's Health, Women's Health and Runner's World to life through travel, creating opportunities for our communities to explore the world together." Sophie Buxton, head of marketing UK & Europe at Intrepid Travel, continued: "We're thrilled to be partnering with Hearst to bring these holidays to life. At Intrepid, we don't just deliver world-class travel experiences, we connect people through shared interests, and that's exactly what these trips are designed to do. We look forward to using our network of local teams and destination expertise to deliver these exciting itineraries."

Intrepid Travel plans to expand trade team as agent sales soar.

Intrepid Travel plans to expand trade team as agent sales soar. Intrepid Travel plans to expand its trade team as UK and Ireland agent sales continue to soar, despite challenges in the Middle East. The adventure specialist plans to recruit an additional member of staff to join its six-strong team, with "the opportunity to expand further with the pace of growth". Carrie Grant, Intrepid's head of industry partnerships for the UK and Ireland, said: "We're planning to grow our trade team. Scotland and Ireland are exciting opportunities for Intrepid, so we're looking to invest more in those markets to give agents even more support, training and face-to-face engagement." She added: "The UK and Ireland industry channel is up more than 30% year on year - an incredible achievement when you consider the geopolitical disruptions, particularly around the Middle East." Grant reported record-breaking sales in January and February, with the trade performing "exceptionally well" before the Middle East conflict. She said: "We worked closely with our agent partners, adjusted our focus, supported customers with flexibility, and made sure we were giving agents the tools, offers and communication they needed. "When you combine great product, strong partnerships, attractive offers and the confidence that comes from training and fam experiences, agents continue to deliver fantastic results." Grant and her trade sales team explored Morocco earlier this month with 60 agents as part of the operator's biggest fam trip. "We've invested more than ever in fam trips, events and immersive experiences and the response has been amazing," she said. "Following the success of our Morocco Summit, we want to keep raising the bar and become the go-to operator for experiential agent training." About 40% of sales come via agents because "customers value the expertise, reassurance and personal recommendations that only a great travel agent can provide", she added. "Agents have supported Intrepid every step of the way and played a huge role in our growth," said Grant. "That's why we're so passionate about investing in the trade. "Whether it's fam trips, training, incentives or exclusive campaigns, we want to give agents the tools, confidence and support they need to succeed." Upcoming initiatives include a webinar series, Black Friday campaigns and a 'Prep for Peaks' programme. The operator will also be at the annual conference of the Association of Touring & Adventure Suppliers in Silverstone from September 21-22.
