Requirements
  • A Missouri Certified Nursing Assistant license, prior experience as a Nurse Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician, Surgical Technician, Patient Care Technician, or Behavioral Health Technician, or enrollment in a nursing program with completion of Fundamentals of Nursing is required.
  • Completion of a state-approved unlicensed assist personnel program, satisfaction of exempted unlicensed assist personnel guidelines with documented proof, or enrollment in the SSM Health unlicensed assist personnel program is required.
  • Basic Life Support HealthCare Provider certification from the American Heart Association is required.
  • No experience is required.
  • The role requires constant standing and walking, frequent communication, hearing, lifting or carrying and pushing or pulling objects weighing 0–25 pounds, reaching, gripping, keyboard use and data entry, and near and distance vision.
  • The role occasionally requires bending, stooping, crawling, kneeling, sitting, squatting, repetitive foot, leg, hand and arm movements, lifting or carrying and pushing or pulling objects weighing 25–50 pounds, lifting or moving patients, smell, and driving.
Responsibilities
  • Receive patient-care assignments from the registered nurse in charge and initiate delegated tasks based on demonstrated competence for the specific patient age group.
  • Collect and document data for admission assessments, reassessments, appointments, and surgeries, and provide appropriate data to the registered nurse or licensed practical nurse for analysis and validation.
  • Inform the licensed nurse of changes in patient condition or needs, patient complaints, and patient or significant-other educational needs.
  • Stock and maintain supplies and equipment according to patient-care needs and cost-containment requirements.
  • Answer telephones, relay messages, transcribe physician orders, and prepare and organize patient medical records.
  • In an inpatient environment, answer patient calls for help, take vital signs, monitor behavior and physical condition, and assist with bathing, ambulation, feeding, skin care, hygiene, bed making, dressing changes, enemas, ostomy care, toileting, turning, cough and deep breathing, catheter care, biological specimen collection, and measurement and recording of fluid intake and output.
  • Prepare inpatients for discharge, accompany them upon dismissal as indicated, and orient new patients and significant others to the nursing unit.
  • In an outpatient environment, manage referrals for medical and surgical specialist appointments and assist patients age three or older with care.
  • Perform point-of-care testing according to policies and procedures.
  • Maintain constant alertness and work safely.
  • Perform other assigned duties.
