Requirements
  • Current independent-level licensure as a mental health counselor, therapist, social worker, licensed professional counselor, or independently licensed behavioral health clinician, meeting state, Commonwealth, or customer-specific requirements.
  • A master's degree from an accredited graduate program in a mental-health-related field or social work.
  • Willingness to accept short-notice assignments of undefined duration, including weekends.
  • Ability to cover full-time assignments ranging from a weekend to two weeks.
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal instruction and guidance and follow provided instructions.
  • Ability to engage and communicate quickly with military members, spouses, children, students, parents, and coworkers, including in emergent situations.
  • Ability to traverse indoor and outdoor military installation environments, including uneven terrain, stairs, steep inclines, grass, and changing weather conditions.
  • Ability to comply with site-specific military installation requirements, including required immunizations or vaccinations and provision of vaccination records when applicable.
  • Ability to prove United States citizenship and fluency in English.
  • Advanced knowledge of brief therapy and solution-focused counseling methods.
  • For Child and Youth Behavioral positions, experience with children and youth and a specialty in child and adolescent development or psychology meeting Magellan MFLC CYB criteria.
  • Ability to follow line-of-sight protocol when working with children.
  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships with community resources and provide appropriate referrals and linkages.
  • Ability to manage duty-to-warn and restricted-reporting situations according to Department of Defense protocol.
  • Current driver's license and other required credentials or certifications.
Responsibilities
  • Provide non-medical, short-term, solution-focused counseling to adults, children, and youth of service members, including assessment, brief counseling, consultation, action planning, referrals, and follow-up.
  • Provide coverage for short-term, surge, on-demand, post-deployment, absent-counselor, summer-camp, and backfill assignments supporting the Military and Family Life Counseling program.
  • Provide Adult or Child and Youth Behavioral counseling services to military service members and their families at military installations, schools, youth programs, summer camps, community readiness centers, and related settings.
  • Support staff and personnel at child development centers, Department of Defense Education Activity and community schools, youth programs, and summer camps, including parent training and guidance.
  • Provide training and health and wellness presentations and participate in health fairs and other base or installation activities.
  • Enter counselor activity data daily through a smartphone or web application while maintaining service-member and family-member confidentiality and anonymity.
  • Create a visible, approachable, and confidential counseling presence on installations and, for Child and Youth Behavioral counselors, in child and youth settings.
  • Partner with installation or facility points of contact to provide Adult and Child and Youth Behavioral services that address installation needs.
  • Develop strong working relationships with installation or facility points of contact.
  • Communicate with regional supervisors and participate in individual and group supervision, sharing trends and issues from assigned installations and facilities.
  • Respond to critical incidents and special requests as directed by the point of contact and approved by the Office of the Secretary of Defense program manager.
  • Participate in in-services, training, Quality Improvement committees, and other contract activities as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prior military service, military-family-member experience, or strong familiarity with military culture.
  • For Child and Youth Behavioral assignments, experience working in a school setting to qualify for backing up a school position.
