Responsibilities
  • Provide advanced technical expertise and service new and existing clients through cross-selling opportunities, account development, execution of client requests, and problem solving in accordance with company objectives and procedures.
  • Manage the entire underwriting cycle for individual accounts and assist in preparing and calculating underwriting figures for the Business Plan.
  • Lead and guide team members in developing and completing individual and departmental goals, and liaise with the Senior Vice President on team-member progress and performance.
  • Review relevant underwriting and risk information and communicate findings and analysis to senior management.
  • Initiate pricing discussions on new and renewal accounts and liaise with Actuarial and management to ensure pricing is competitive and profitable.
  • Ensure business is carried out within underwriting capacity.
  • Continuously review the portfolio for exposures and pricing adjustments and develop recommendations aligned with the business strategy and risk appetite.
  • Participate in and contribute to account discussions at Peer Review meetings and develop solutions as issues arise.
  • Identify and raise issues with in-force accounts and risks; liaise with claims, legal, and loss control disciplines; and recommend solutions to mitigate or refer risks to management.
  • Advise clients on policy coverages and policy contract wording.
  • Ensure submissions are written within regulatory guidelines.
  • Participate in discussions on risks written by other offices.
  • Prepare and maintain management reports and make recommendations for the Senior Vice President and management, including financial-performance analysis for regional and product-line initiatives.
  • Provide management information on operational performance, budgets, forecasts, financial plans, statistical reports, and productivity reports.
  • Work with the Senior Vice President and management to prepare revenue and expense budgets and monitor compliance with profit and growth objectives.
  • Prepare studies, reports, analyses, and recommendations using economic and statistical data; devise methods for collecting and processing data; and review economic data to report research conclusions and monitor economic changes.
  • Develop new business opportunities aligned with the underwriting strategy.
  • Travel to and participate in or lead client meetings, balancing costs with business needs.
  • Maintain key client relationships critical to ongoing business success.
  • Engage with other market practitioners to obtain market information.
  • Establish and maintain knowledge of internal controls and underwriting procedures.
  • Foster team behavior and a sales-oriented department culture.
  • Participate in interviewing, hiring, training, and staff development as needed.
  • Work with company leaders to identify improvement areas, create efficiencies, and improve margins.
  • Develop and implement procedures based on applicable laws, regulations, rules, guidance, and industry standards.
  • Contribute to the operational integration of new acquisitions.
  • Identify, plan, and resolve routine department coverage and workload issues and take necessary action.
  • Underwrite insurance submissions in accordance with the approved business plan and individual authority levels, referring matters to the Senior Vice President as appropriate.
  • Present and discuss personally written risks at Peer Review meetings and articulate the analytical approach to underwriting decisions.
