Requirements
  • An Associate's Degree is required, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
  • Three to five years of hospital billing and/or registration experience, or five to seven years of experience without an Associate's Degree, is required.
  • Strong knowledge of billing and registration regulatory requirements is required.
  • Supervisory experience and demonstrated leadership success are required.
  • The candidate must understand revenue-cycle best-practice principles for inpatient and outpatient services.
  • The candidate must be able to supervise in a highly stressful, dynamically changing department with high patient acuity.
  • The candidate must be able to analyze, trend, and track revenue-cycle issues that impede clean-claim billing and denial prevention.
  • Excellent proficiency in spreadsheets and Microsoft Excel is required.
  • The candidate must have a strong customer focus centered on the optimal patient experience.
  • Knowledge of information-technology integration concepts and system-issue identification is required.
  • The candidate must be able to develop policies and procedures and training resources for adult learners.
  • The candidate must be able to think on their feet to solve operational issues affecting patient flow.
  • The candidate must be organized, methodical, and have strong time-management skills.
  • Demonstrated success managing a high-functioning team and maintaining a strong positive culture is required.
  • The candidate must understand Federal, State, Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act, Joint Commission, Medicare, and Medicaid regulations.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills and strong presentation skills are required.
Responsibilities
  • Oversee daily operations of the Emergency Department, ensuring coverage that supports efficient patient throughput and key performance indicators, including door-to-triage, door-to-full-registration, chest-pain door-to-electrocardiogram, and pharmacy capture.
  • Schedule appropriate coverage, breaks, and meal breaks, and assign or provide frontline coverage when patient volume requires it.
  • Onboard and orient new staff members to the Emergency Department environment.
  • Approve personal leave and combined leave time and track Family and Medical Leave Act usage.
  • Sign off on weekly Kronos records and monitor lateness and unscheduled absences, escalating performance issues to the manager.
  • Ensure accurate and expeditious registration, patient throughput, point-of-service collection, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Make on-the-spot managerial decisions regarding employee issues when supervisory and manager coverage requires it.
  • Support the manager with human-resources management, including interviewing, hiring, counseling, coaching for improvement, and termination, as expected and warranted.
  • Assist with annual or as-needed performance reviews, with goals related to development and succession planning.
  • Ensure that at least 90% of bedside full registrations are completed within 45 minutes of arrival.
  • Ensure compliance with Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act regulations.
  • Assess time-off requests while ensuring appropriate coverage.
  • Support a positive environment free of intolerance, harassment, and behaviors inconsistent with an inclusive environment.
  • Audit workflows in real time to ensure registration standardization and accuracy, and update the training manual as needed.
  • Ensure patients requiring inpatient or observation stays have regulatory forms completed before transfer.
  • Ensure timely completion of annual evaluations.
  • Ensure a safe environment for staff and patients and escalate issues to Security when warranted.
  • Coordinate unscheduled system outages, managing patient volume manually with paper records and whiteboards.
  • Manage operational training schedules for new hires and staff burnout related to learning-partner responsibilities.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's Degree is preferred.
  • Emergency Department experience is preferred.
