envelio offers a cloud-based Intelligent Grid Platform (IGP) that helps distribution system operators digitize and automate grid planning, operations, and interconnection processes as a software service. The platform creates a digital twin of the power grid and uses machine learning to improve data quality, build validated models, and run real-time simulations to forecast grid states, manage congestion, and determine hosting capacity. By automating these workflows, envelio reduces technical evaluation time from weeks to minutes and speeds up DER and renewable energy integration. The company targets DSOs of all sizes and is backed by E.ON, with international expansion including a Boston office to serve North America. Its goal is to accelerate grid modernization and simplify the transition to distributed energy resources.

What believers are saying

  • Envelio joined GridWise Alliance on April 14, 2026, deepening U.S. regulatory access.
  • Reuters honored envelio on July 1, 2026, validating deployment-ready grid software.
  • The January 2026 LoadSEER integration expands planning workflows for utilities using forecast data.

What critics are saying

  • DIgSILENT, Opus One, and Plexigrid target the same utility planning budget.
  • E.ON's majority stake can force envelio into group priorities over independent growth.
  • If utilities standardize on DIgSILENT, envelio becomes an acquired feature, not a platform.

What makes envelio unique

  • envelio's IGP builds physics-based digital twins for distribution grids, not AI approximations.
  • Its June 2026 GPU solver runs annual simulations in under 30 seconds.
  • Strategic Grid Planner automates multi-year planning across 2030, 2035, and 2045 horizons.

envelio's GPU-based solver cuts grid calculations from weeks to 30 seconds — 20,000x faster

Cologne-based envelio has developed a GPU-based power flow solver that accelerates grid calculations up to 20,000 times faster than conventional desktop tools, reducing annual time-series simulations from days or weeks to under 30 seconds. The patent-pending technology uses physics-based calculations rather than AI estimation to simulate power grid behaviour when connecting new loads like data centres, EV charging stations and renewable energy systems. This enables utilities to conduct real-time, large-scale grid simulations as part of daily operations. The breakthrough addresses a critical infrastructure bottleneck, with over 2,500 gigawatts of generation, storage and industrial projects currently stuck in grid connection queues worldwide. The solver allows utilities to assess grid capacities, evaluate connection requests and make investment decisions faster whilst maintaining engineering reliability.

envelio and Integral Analytics integrate LoadSEER forecasting with Intelligent Grid Platform for automated utility planning

envelio, Inc. and Integral Analytics have announced an integration between LoadSEER and the envelio Intelligent Grid Platform, enabling utilities to apply advanced load forecasts directly within grid planning workflows. The integration combines LoadSEER's load forecasting with envelio's distribution network modelling and load flow capabilities. The partnership allows utilities to evaluate future demand growth against real network constraints, assess impacts on feeders and transformers, and improve hosting capacity assessments. By reducing manual data transfers between forecasting and grid modelling tools, utilities can shorten planning cycles whilst maintaining consistency across planning and engineering workflows. The integrated solution supports distribution system planning, interconnection studies and grid investment decisions. Both companies will present the collaboration at DTECH 2026 and host a joint press conference on 4 February.

envelio launches AI-powered Strategic Grid Planner to automate multi-year utility grid planning

Envelio, Europe's leading smart grid software provider, has launched Strategic Grid Planner, a new application enabling automated, multi-year utility grid planning. The software evaluates thousands of technically feasible and economically optimised alternatives across planning horizons to help utilities design cost-effective grid plans for target years like 2030, 2035 and 2045. The tool addresses the challenge of rapidly evolving distributed generation, battery storage and EV charging infrastructure outpacing traditional planning methods. It uses AI-based optimisation and high-performance simulation to coordinate decisions across planning years, assessing grid optimisation before considering reinforcement or expansion. Strategic Grid Planner expands envelio's Intelligent Grid Platform, already used by over 80 utilities worldwide. The system features a self-learning algorithm that continuously improves based on insights from each planning scenario.
