Requirements
  • Graduate of an Operating Room Technique program or a school of vocational nursing.
  • Certified Surgical Technician, Licensed Surgical Assistant, or eligibility to obtain one within six months of employment; current Texas licensure as a Licensed Vocational Nurse is preferred.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required within 30 days of employment and before patient care is administered independently.
  • Prior operating room experience is preferred.
  • Ability to demonstrate appropriate sterile technique and adhere to infection prevention protocols.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and appropriately handle protected health information.
  • Understanding of patient rights, including confidentiality, informed consent, and privacy.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of frequent standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and reaching, as well as occasional sitting, bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, and twisting.
  • Visual, hearing, and color vision acuity required to perceive changes in patients’ skin color and the colors of medicines and solutions.
  • Reliable transportation and a means of communication for on-call demands.
  • Ability to work safely around toxic or caustic chemicals, moving mechanical parts, potential electric shock, radiant energy, communicable diseases, and blood-borne pathogens.
Responsibilities
  • Assist the Perioperative Staff Nurse with collecting data pertinent to the planned surgical intervention.
  • Assist the Perioperative Staff Nurse in developing a plan of care that prescribes interventions to attain expected outcomes.
  • Assist surgical team members in implementing interventions identified in the plan of care.
  • Assist the Perioperative Staff Nurse in evaluating patient progress toward expected outcomes.
  • Prepare and handle supplies and equipment to maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for the patient during surgical intervention.
  • Participate in continuous Quality Improvement programs.
  • Participate in hospital and departmental group meetings.
  • Participate in survey readiness activities and help ensure departmental compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Abide by the Huntsville Memorial Hospital Legal Compliance Code of Conduct.
  • Maintain a safe work environment and report safety concerns appropriately.
  • Interact effectively with hospital staff, medical staff, patients, and visitors.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
