Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Communication, organizational, and computer skills, with the ability to work independently and under pressure.
- Current professional RN license issued or recognized by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners.
- BLS and ACLS certifications are required.
- PALS or ENPC certification is required within six months of hire.
Responsibilities
- Collect current symptoms and detailed patient histories, and coordinate with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans.
- Organize and plan emergency department patient care; assess patients, determine treatment rationale and delivery, follow protocols, administer medications accurately, and educate patients.
- Complete monthly, annual, and assigned training.
- Accurately obtain and record assessment results, care delivery, medication administration, treatments, and patient responses in the electronic medical record or designated documentation packets.
- Perform daily checks of and clean equipment, including monitors, code equipment, crash carts, and oxygen cylinders.
- Prepare and administer medications according to the rights established by the Texas Board of Nursing and facility policies and procedures.
- Maintain care standards established by the Emergency Nurses Association and facility policies and procedures.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with coworkers, patients, and internal and external customers.
- Use AIDET in interactions with patients and family members and utilize whiteboards for patient communication.
- Monitor patients using appropriate equipment as ordered.
- Triage patients appropriately using the ESI system.
- Arrive prepared and on time to receive patient reports.
- Provide discharge instructions, follow-up care, and education to patients and family members.
- Abide by HIPAA regulations.
- Use SBAR when communicating with the oncoming shift and physicians and when giving reports to ancillary or other nursing services.
- Escalate potential safety events and speak up to stop the line when necessary.
- Deliver patient care promptly with appropriate urgency and prioritization.
- Stabilize patients by coordinating professionally and calmly with medical staff providers, EMS, coworkers, patients, and family members.
- Float to other areas of the hospital as assigned.
- Stock assigned rooms and keep work areas clean.
- Treat everyone as a customer and use scripting and other tools to ensure consistent customer service.
- Express recognition and appreciation to others, use AIDET principles, respond promptly to requests, complaints, and questions, and maintain a positive attitude.
- Wear a nametag properly and follow the dress code policy.
- Answer phones correctly and promptly, prepare for meetings, meet deadlines, avoid gossip, act ethically, treat others respectfully, respect customers' and coworkers' time, and establish and maintain effective relationships with customers and coworkers.
Desired Qualifications
- One to two years of emergency department experience is preferred.
- A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred.
- TNCC certification is preferred.
