Requirements

Responsibilities
  • Analyze case papers and prepare legal advice, notices, and various correspondence at the first instance.
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders, including chartering, operations, insurance, post-fixture claims, crewing, technical managers, and commercial managers, to ensure timely and efficient handling of disputes involving Scorpio.
  • Liaise with external parties, primarily external lawyers, P&I Clubs, and H&M underwriters.
  • Assist chartering and operations departments with reviewing and negotiating charter-party terms and addressing immediate operational issues.
  • Keep abreast of legal developments, particularly maritime law and the interpretation of contracts, including charter-party clauses, that may affect claims handling and resolution.
  • Advise on and assess the risk and exposure involved when there is a deviation from standard agreed charter-party clauses.
  • Run internal seminars, including web-based and PowerPoint presentations, on shipping-related matters, updates, and disputes.
  • Maintain an up-to-date and detailed claims status chart and report weekly to internal stakeholders.
  • Report and provide updates to the Manager—Legal Counsel and other relevant internal stakeholders on ongoing or threatened litigation by or against Scorpio.
  • Prepare annual reports on cases and issues handled by the Shipping Claims Team.
  • Assist finance and other internal stakeholders with external audits.
  • Review contracts, charter parties, pool agreements, letters of undertaking, settlement agreements, warranties, and other relevant documents.
Desired Qualifications
  • A minimum of two years of relevant shipping claims-handling experience, gained in-house or in law firms.
  • An LLM degree.
  • Knowledge and experience in international law.
  • Prior experience handling matters involving the tanker trade.
  • A sailing background.
