About the job

Requirements
  • Have 5+ years of backend or software engineering experience, with a track record of designing systems others build on top of.
  • Have owned large-scale, enterprise products end-to-end.
  • Be comfortable designing APIs, data models, permissions, and backend abstractions.
  • Have strong judgment about when to keep systems simple, when to make them flexible, and when to make clear product decisions.
  • Be customer-focused and able to translate product needs into thoughtful backend foundations.
  • Enjoy working in fast-paced environments with high ownership and autonomy.
  • Be proactive, detail-oriented, and take pride in building high-quality systems.
Responsibilities
  • Build the state, history, permissioning, and event models that make every Lapel primitive reliable and extensible.
  • Design an extensibility model that gives customers power without turning Lapel into an unstructured blank canvas.
  • Make primitives usable by both people and agents, with clean actions, histories, permissions, and memory surfaces.
  • Help decide what should become a Lapel default, what should be configurable, and what should remain fully custom.

About the company

Lapel provides a customer operations platform that helps internet-based businesses deliver the personal touch of offline service. The product unifies and supports every customer touchpoint, enabling teams to listen closely, respect customers’ time, and remember individual preferences to inform faster, more proactive engagement. Unlike typical online support tools that focus on ticketing or chat alone, Lapel aims to cover the full range of customer interactions, helping teams make quicker decisions and maintain a consistent, personable experience across channels. By partnering with early adopters, Lapel sets a standard for online service that preserves the care and attention found in neighborhood shops during the digital transition. The model is likely subscription-based, charging access to the platform for ongoing use by internet-based companies looking to enhance their customer service experience.

What believers are saying

  • Lapel posted open roles in June 2026, signaling active product and go-to-market buildout.
  • Its June 2025 seed backing from YC, Sierra Ventures, and Soma Capital validates demand.
  • Customer operations software remains crowded, but Lapel’s real-time orchestration angle matches 2026 CX priorities.

What critics are saying

  • Zendesk’s July 2026 AI agents and ServiceNow CSM crush Lapel’s differentiation fast.
  • Lapel’s site shows only a tiny San Francisco team, limiting enterprise implementation speed.
  • If Lapel cannot convert early access into revenue, it dies under platform-suite incumbents.

What makes Lapel unique

  • Lapel sells hospitality-at-scale infrastructure, unifying customer data into one real-time account view.
  • Its product spans inbound, expansion, and renewal touchpoints, not just ticket handling.
  • Lapel’s early YC-backed positioning targets cross-functional customer operations for internet businesses.
